I posted this all over but still think about it everyday so thought I'd share it here also. Back in April I drew an archery ram tag. Funny thing is I was never really an archer. I killed a good ram in 1999 with a bow but only hunted maybe 2 bow seasons since then. So after drawing I had to find my bow lol. Had the local pro shop get it all tuned up and I was practicing a lot all summer with it. Decided I'd sight the 2nd pin in for 30 yards and then wherever the other pins fell was what they'd be at. Ended up at 22 yards, 30 yards, 38 yards, 45 yards and 52 yards.
Scouted a lot of days with my family. Son took a week off from work to help me. On day two, with him across the canyon spotting and waving me in, I spent 4 hours trying to find a lone mature ram. Finally I stepped out on a rocky outcropping with dropoffs on all 3 sides. There he was at 38 yards steeply below me. I ranged him 3 times thinking no way is he exactly 38 yards. So I put the 38 yard pin on him and after a 20 yard run, he fell over and rolled out of sight. Quite the moment for me after many years of hunting various critters with archery, muzzleloader and mostly rifle.
He was a nice 8 year old ram and getting to share the hunt with my son and the pack out with him and my daughter made it that much better.
