Anyone care to see a pic of a long-shooter with camo barrel?

I forgot to get bead blasting on the new 32" SS barrel for my custom build, that basically ended up being what amounts to an F-gun. Although I was unwilling to consider any sort of coating such as paint, I wanted to see what it would look like with a simple camo wrap covering. As far as pure function goes (from a sniper's standpoint), it really is ideal. But for "show" purposes, it's not even close to having the look that you would want such a piece of hardware to have. That's why I'm heasitating on whether or not I should even post a pic of it. It isn't the same scenario as a camoed shotgun barrel. Basically, the look that you want a rifle to have is CLEAN & MEAN. To covey that to lookers, you DON'T want to hide the steely look of the barrel, which is the essence of the rifle itself. So before I show it, I want lookers to understand that I know that it doesn't look right, for a rifle that you would hope to impress anybody with, anyways. It almost looks as if the barrel is nothing more than a carboard tube, or perhaps the straight section of a camo-covered walking cane. But at this point I'm only looking at it as temporary.

With that being said, should I post the pic?

Why not? It will move to the bottom of the page fast enough anyway....

I suppose you do have somewhat of a point there - if that is any consolation.

I WOULD prefer not to get totally hammered by those who insist that it is nothing short of sak-religious to put that (or ANY) sort of "dress" on a rifle's barrel though.

It's a little early yet this morning, but when the sun does show itself, I'll try to get a good "shot" of it. If I don't end up going out to the range first, that is.

UNRELATED TOPIC: I just viewed the video of the lead-for-popcorn trade-off incident at the movie theater on GMA. If privileges bestowed upon us, such as the 2nd amendment, are expected to be able to be retained, we CANNOT allow incidents such as this (completely senseless shootings) to continue happening at the rate that they have been occurring lately.

That is like an ugly fat girl saying "wanna see my boobs?" You want to see them just because they are boobs, but you don't because she is ugly and fat.

Hope I don't offend anyone with this comment.

That doesn't offend ME one bit, but your anaogy goes just a bit overboard [I think]. The case you have presented is DEFINITELY something that I'd prefer not to see at all (zero curiosity factor). Maybe unlees I've been drinking - in which case I think I would just be laughing my *** off! What I am going to present is NOT going to gross you out, it's just going to "not look right", when compared with what you are used to seeing a rifle look like.

Ok, I'm off to the range right now. I might grab a pic from out there. And if the punched-out sheet of paper ends up looking half way decent, I may even include it in the pic.

Gotta get a little bit of anticipation brew'd up before I make the actual "presentation", right?

Yes it was excessive and just a funny analogy that ran through my head early this morning. It doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it shoots well! Have fun at the range.

What does a moped and a fat girl have in common?

After giving it a couple minutes of thought, this is all that I could come up with: They are both very easy to ride??

I'm a little jelous that your feelin "ducky", and I'm not. Maybe I just need some shining up, if you catch my drift...

Speaking of drifting, I'll drift back on to topic and say that I'm now back from the range and ready to present "arms". Spent a little more time there than anticipated due to sliding on the snowy and iced-up access road and "drifted" right into the ditch. Had to winch my way out of that one. I hope that treadwright.com gets the tire size that my merc mariner so badly needs back in stock soon.

The rifle is my own (un-smithed) custom build (my 1st), on a remington action, featuring a remnut conversion on the 32" (#0 contour) McGowen pre-fit barrel. The rounds fired today were 139SST moly-coated pills, propelled by 100gr of RL-33, at a average velocity of 3525fps. The last pic is a close-up of the 5-shot group (@100yd), way off to the right of the bull's eye, at the edge of the 1" grid paper.

I guess 7 RUM.

So first you keep us in suspense with your barrel covering, which isn't THAT bad. Now you keep the chambering from us....

Nothing wrong with a little camo wrap. I don't like the tape but the camo form wrap that sticks to itself I use quite a bit (actually have some that's issued to me).
Both can hold moisture to the metal's surface, and if you wrap the barrel then put it in the stock it can mess with a floating barrel or how the action/stock mate up.
I prefer paint over tape. If you don't like it just remove it or paint over it, plus it's easy to pre-match the weapon to my environment.

Yes, it's 7RUM. The guessing-game was NOT intentional. I thought it was stated it in one of the lead-up posts. But I must have gotten this thread confused with others [related to the rifle] that I also have going.

Now that we're past the "man am I going to get reamed if I show this" stage, I can discuss it without any fears. I think the rifle might (I am using that term loosely) be a good example of a sniper's prized "hammer" that is never seen or talked about - or even admitted to exist! But in MY case, such a scenario would be pure delusions of grandeur - so I AM willing to go through the show-and-tell routine. Ok, now that all the cards are on the table, here are my own thoughts, open for debate:

There should be no negative effect on function whatsoever, that I can see. It's pure cosmetics, but that can (and usually does) have a very powerful effect on the mind of the subjects taking [in] the view. In my opinion, the biggest loss that a non-steely-looking barrel promotes, is the loss of authoritative-looking-ness. It goes against [the grain of] what one wants [and expects] to see, in a firearm.

The other "cosmetic" detail not normally seen on a rifle, that no one has yet spoke up about, is what I will call the muzzle/crown bumper, or protector. It takes away yet another level of authoritativness, replacing it with, what looks to me, like the "walking cane" look. I'm going to have to say that it does seem to be serving it's function very well though. But there IS one missing item that, cosmetically speaking, might prove to be an excellent "complement" to it. And that would be a matching-material sleeve (vinyl) at the back-end of the barrel, covering the barrel nut, which does "shine" brightly. I'll have to see what I can dig up, and then post another, better pic of the rifle.

Warning! This thread is more than 11 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
