was given this old Shaw Walker safe (wow this thing is heavy)

But the combo is unknown. Lock plate is removed so it opens and closes without a code.

Is there a way to set a new combination or figure out the old?

Turn the dials and watch the tumblers on in the lock. If it is a three disc (tumbler) spin the dial about four times to reset the thing before beginning the left-right-left-right sequence. These locks are made to keep people on the front side out... easy to read the combo from the back side.

Thanks, unfortunately the rear plate cannot be removed on mine without also removing the tumblers. Once I place the plate back on I'm completely blind to the position they are at

I guess I could take a cutting wheel and make the plate like in the video.

Thank you, that does help. It appears to be exactly the same lock as mine
