7x57 COAL

I purchased a Ruger #1, RSI, International from a friend. Actually been after him to sell me this rifle for 30 plus years. I bought some Nosler 7x57 brass. I am loading IMR4350, have lots of this, with Nosler 140 BT and Hornady 139 SST. The seating depth for the 140 BT is a SAAMI OAL 3.065. Whereas the Hornady 139SST is a SAAMI 3.000. The two reloading manuals differ in OAL. Now, I have an old Sierra manual that states a SAAMI length of a maximum of 3.000.
Who is loading the 7x57 and what is your maximum seating depth? MTG

It has been a while, but I loaded for a friend, using CBTO (.020" off the lands), not COAL. I have a Ruger No.1 in .243 Win and load mine .020" off the lands, too.

I load for both of my 7X57's Remington 700 Berger classic hunter 168gr 3.071 coal the Winchester featherweight same bullet 3.064 coal

I have an OAL length gauge but the casing is on order. So, I have not been able to measure the chamber length. I normally would start at .020 off the lands. I looked up the current Sierra SAAMI length which is 3.071 which is different than my old Sierra manual. I will have to wait for the chamber length cartridge to come to actually measure the chamber. At the moment I will seat to no more than 3.065. This is not a bench rifle. It will be a heavy timber stalker. I am not looking for minute groups. One MOA will suffice. MTG

I had one on a Ruger M77 30 years ago, and I always loaded it to whatever COAL gave me .030" off the lands. I no longer have my data for this cartridge, but, I distinctly remember running H4350 and Hornady 154g spire points. Killed our Fallow deer very dead.

I had one on a Ruger M77 30 years ago, and I always loaded it to whatever COAL gave me .030" off the lands. I no longer have my data for this cartridge, but, I distinctly remember running H4350 and Hornady 154g spire points. Killed our Fallow deer very dead.

I still have a tang safety 77 chambered in 7x57. Over the years 4350 and 154 grain spire points has worked very well for me in that rifle.

I have a 2005 vintage 7x57 #1A that shoots the 140 grain Ballistic Tip very well. This rifle has a very long throat which I believe was common at the time it was made. In order to get the bullets near the lands, have to seat it very long at 3.200"+ COAL to get the bullet .010" off the lands (CBTO),

Would be interesting to see what you find once you get the chamber measurements.

The cartrisge is 133 years old. That's a lot of reamer spec's to guess about.

In my 45 years with this cartridge, I learned to forget spec's and tailor the load to the specific chamber.

Have one load that shoots best at 3.2" OAL but most a little less because of ogive shape.

Recomend starting with the magazine length that still chambers, (for those with repeaters) or determine OAL with the #1A snd take your seating die and press to the range. By seating around .003-005" per group, you will soon learn what that rifle likes.

Standardizing on a favored bullet makes it easier. My latest rifle, a SG Model 70 favors 150gn Nosler BT's, 175gn Partitions and 145gn Barnes LRX's. There is only one animal on US soil "I" would personally feel undergunned.

Pretty much what I was going to write. Have combo rifles, drillings and bolt rifles in 7x57R and 7x57. The COAL is different on each one, never worried about what SAAMI had to say about it. They will all shoot sub .7 MOA with the loads that I tailored for each one. They also all shoot Sellier and Bellot factory 173 grain under an inch. Never found the 7x57 to be all that picky or hard to load for.
