6.5 twist?

I am building a 6.5x284 this spring and have found an 8.5 twist barrel but I am not sure that it will stabilize the longer 140gr bullets. Will this twist stabilize the 142gr Sierras or should I go with a 1 in 8 to be sure?

Berger quotes a 9 twist for their 140 gr VLD. Don't have any experience w/either, but I think it will work.

You will be fine with the 8.5 twist with the 142 gr SMK in the 6.5-284.

I have an 8.5 twist in my 6.5x284 1K light gun. It shoots the 142 SMK just fine, best group was 3.75" for 5 shots at 1000yds.

Thanks for the responses guys. Have the 8.5 on the way. Next question would be what kind of velocity should be expected out of a 26 inch finished length with the Sierras?. My friend is also building a rifle in the same caliber and is making his with a 26- inch barrel. I am leaning towards a 28 inch myself. If for no other reason I can at least set it back when the time comes.
