I contacted Midway and asked about the new Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor brass, was told they got some in and sold it all really fast.
I see that they are making it with a small Primer Pocket.

Could someone explain to me what the advantage is in having the Small Primer Pocket over the Large one?

So any rifle chambered for the 6.5 CM will work with a Small Primer ??

Haven't had the opportunity to use them yet, but my understanding is they will allow running a little higher pressure without blowing out the primer pockets. The smaller primer is also supposed to be a very good match with a Creedmoor size case and thus give superior ignition for accuracy and low ES.

I believe you are correct in saying they will work with any Creedmoor chambered rifle. It does not require a different firing pin or anything.

I agree with Barrelnut about the ignition.
You may or may not have to watch for the decapping pin size.
Just speculation..

Yes it uses a .056 flash hole. If you don't have the pin for it u can call your die maker and most are good about helping you out. Like Redding and Forster. The theory that Lapua has on a small flash hole is the primer ignition is something that can really alter SD and ES. So make it as small as possible. As little intrusion into the grand scheme of pushing the bullet down to the target as possible. Watch the 6.5 guys interview with Lapua at this years show show and the guy dives breifly Into it. It is great stuff. Just has a quirk or two.

All I know is the small primer sure works on my 6.5X47. That combined with Lapua brass does hide pressure so work up loads carefully. I think this brass will really step up the creedmore performance.

I had a gun specialist at Scheel's tell me the small primer pocketed Lapua will require a modification to the bolt. He theoretically confirmed that with Cooper Firemarms when I was ordering a new 6.5 CM so I decided not to use the Lapua brass. Wouldn't mind confirming that this information was incorrect.

Never heard of this....

I believe that some that have a firing pin that is meant for large Primers just get them shaved a lil bit if there is a problem. Or contact manufacturer and see if they will just send you one. I believe this issue is a rare one.

I can´t think of an obvious reason for this. Both primers are seated at the center of the case base and the firing pin strikes dead center so a small or large primer should work on the same bolt. It´s like saying you can´t build a 6.5X47 Lapua on a rem 700 that used to be a .308 Win.

Excellent comparison. In my understanding it happens rarely where a primer strike is slightly off center and is large enough to get close to the edge or something. Ive never personally seen it but some on the snipershide have run into the issue.

The report I read said it has to do with primer cratering and flowing into the gap of the bolt face. The firing pin hole is bushed with a smaller diameter firing pin. The increased pressure will find some place to go otherwise.

I see if I can find the article.

Good luck

I have heard of bushing the bolt on some 6.5X47. My R Bros is built on a Defiance so not sure what Travis did. I just built another X47 but have not shot it; so I do not know how it's going to work. This build is on a Remington 700 SA. Should know if it will work soon. From what I understand not every gun has this problem of punctured primers.
