If you were going to have a rimless 45-70 and keep it the same coal what cartridge could you use? Something with a .473 face I'm guessing? If using a box mag, what about a short mag possibility? I'm thinking about the possibility of chambering a blr for this, as the action would be better suited over an 1895 or any other lever action. If I could get a 500gr going over 2k would be a kick!

458 Win mag does about 2000 fps w/500 gr. bullet. Don't know if you can stuff it into a BLR though.

I was hoping for a shorter cartridge in the short action realm at most. 300wm and 270win are in the 64k+ range and 458wm is about 10k less. Not 100% sure about the 458 numbers? 500gr might be asking too much at that speed!

Step up the face, there was the 458x2. The .473 ends up at 452 with brass walls and some taper for extraction. 458x2 was belted made from win mag brass.

Nosler load data: 500 gr. bullet, 68gr H335, 24" barrel, 2087 FPS

I wanna' know how you plan to set the headspace on a straight walled, rimmed cartridge that has no rim! Turn the rim of a 45/70 down to less than .504", what does the case headspace on? What is the extractor going to engage, for extracting the case? Rimmed cases headspace off of the rim! The rim is also what the extractor 'grabs'......

They already make it, it is called a 450 Marlin. 450 beside a 458 Win Mag They both headspace on the Rim.

On the front of the belt, not the rim. .450 Marlin brass seems not to exist. Maybe Hornaday will make another run of it soon, along with .405 Winchester. The OP wants to use a BLR. Magnum round may not work in that magazine. Don't know,,, really don't care. I just had to point out the rimmed cartridges headspace on the rim. There's no shoulder to headspace from. Turning the rim off of a rimmed case leaves you with nothing useful.

I have a blr in 450 and there is very little room in magazine. I'm also hoping brass does come around again because it's sure hard to find right now

Notice the belt on the .450 Marlin is longer, and extends further forward, than the belt on the .458. It can not be made from any other belted magnum case. It is unique, and uses unique headspace gages.

If you get to the point that you just can't find 450 Marlin Brass, take the rifle to a smith and have him set the barrel back one turn. That way you can use 458 Win Mag or any other regualr belted mag brtass. Problem with the 450 is it has a .252 head to front of belt distance, and mag brass is .220. Hornady did this to keep 450 brass from being put into a sub 45 calber standard MAg chamber, but it means if the brass is never made again this may be the only fix.
