My 338 RUM is built. I should say my stock XCR II has its brake and scope installed, at least its temp scope. I plan to write up a thorough review on it. Anyways, can I get an update on current 338 bullets appropriate for the RUM? I have purchased some Sierra 250 MK, Winchester 225 PowerPoint, 250 & 285 AMAX. I read about Bergers but the info is old on here and it sounds like they were a flop. My dad is doing the reloads and hes got me between 225 and 285 grains. Says the heavier bullets will be better with the powder he has. RL25 & 7828 I think.

This is really to begin to see what the barrel likes. The gun will be used as a long range hole puncher and medium to big game killer. For hunting I will probably use a Nosler flavor, weight and construction will vary by animal.

1. Any other bullets weights and powders I need to consider?

2. Any other advice?

My buddy built a 338 REM ULTRA IMP. We tested this gun at Williamsport off the concrete benches with competition rests. First he tried Retumbo and 250 and 300 grain bullets. The gun shot around 2900 with the 300 Berger and shot 5 shot groups in 7 to 8 inches. Then I told him to try Reloader 33 and I gave him a pound. The 300 Berger shot around 3050 but it strung them a little. He then dropped a grain and shot them right close to 3000 and the gun went to 5 inches. I would not be afraid to shoot the 300 Berger. I shoot it in my 338 Lapua IMP and it will shoot through steel at 1000 yards. It has been devastating on whitetails. The first generation Berger had thin jackets and were ok to about 3050 FPS. After that they would slump and some accuracy was lost. I still shoot them first generation 300 grain Elites and have no problem with accuracy as I slowed them down to 3000. That bullet really shoots in everything we tried them in. The Re33 is the powder for the big 33's. It gives about 100 feet more velocity. By the way your gun looks a lot like my buddies. He used a 30 inch 1.250 for 5 inches tapered to around .980 at the muzzle. Matt

Thanks for the reply, I will probably add some Bergers as well. A powder hunt may be in order as well.
