338 LM Proof Research Stiller Manners

This is my second post , I wanted to share this build incase someone could get some use out of what i encountered


i wanted to make as light as i could see specs below


stiller tac 338 action
PTG bottom metal + weatherby magazine 2 stack straight feed
Shilen trigger
maners t-5 stock with 90% carbon liner
proof research carbon barrel 27" + SS brake
stillers precision 20 moa base
nf ultralight rings

Nice.
If you don't mind, what does it weigh in dollars? Be nice to know the cost to build a relatively lightweight 338 LM.

I had allot of issues with this gun, but now it shoots 300 gr accubonds @ 2750 fps .5 moa 3 shots on a good day .75 on a bad

The barrel is a bartlien, when i was trying to break it in it would not clean up very well and copper fowled something terrible. It also shot terrible 2-3" groups with all kinds of combos and was very inconsistent.

I sent it back to proof research even through they did not chamber the barrel. They were great to work with and they ran a bore scope down the tube and found some rough marks in the chanber from im guessing a not as sharp as it needed to be reamer. They aslo found that the ammount that the barrel was floated was insufficent and the barrel was making contact with the stock.

I think maybe the manners light fill might not be quite as stiff as their regular fill? that may not be true

This is my theory, carbon is as stiff as steel by weight. So comparing a carbon wrapped barrel to say an all steel barrel that weighs the same would be like comparing a sendero contour carbon barrel to a 2 or 3 contour steel barrel.

That being said i believe the carbon barrel had quite a bit more whip than than say if it had an all steel sendero contour barrel.

After about 100 shots of breaking in and allot of sanding to open up barrel channel. it is an awesome killing maching.


Maybe i have issues but it sure is fun to shoot stuff with a 338 lapua
