338 lapua imp. range report

Got out for a little shooting this morning with my 338 imRp. started at 1600 yards on large rocks, Running 300 OTM bergers pointed .858 B.C . at 3025 fps. 70/44/29.35 were the kestel 4500s conditons. Wind left to right. 6mph . Dial up to 41.75 and 4 moa dial for wind hold. I aimed at the white spot on rock that we always shot at. Its about 1 moa in size, we have Milled it several times. Fired and actual got with in about a couple of inches of my mark perfect hight just need a little more windage!! Man I was happy. Cold bore , first round, almost perfect wind call. I fired 9 more rounds. 2 went a 1/2 moa high and 7 were with in the 1 moa white spot on the rock! Moved next to 1900 yards. Theirs a crack in the rock. Vertical. its 6 ft. The width is 18 inch. Dialed up to 56.75. First rd a little right. Forgot to add some wind. Made new wind call. 5.25 moa . Next 5 went right in the crack!!! Don't now group size but crack is under 1 moa. Its cool to see, because you can see the dust come from in side of the crack! I was having agreat time till I found out I only brought 20 rds. I let gun cool for 15 mins . Took last 4 shoots at large flat rock at 2307 yards. I dialed up to 82.25 moa. Large flat white rock. Car hood size. It puts of good white puffs of dust when hit. Dialed 8 moa. First 3 round neither me/ threw the scope or my spotter threw 20x60x80 Leupold, could see impact? Finally by some mircle on the VERY last shot we both saw it!!! It was High= 1 moa and 1/2 moa left. Had and over all great time burning 20 rds!!! Just thought I would share! The Whidden bullet pointer on the 300 OTMs is giving me about 6% increase in BC from my calculatins.gun)

Very nice job! Do you plan on using pointed bullets for hunting?

What is your load and coal?

NO. You should never use a pointed up bullet for hunting. I am also using the OTM berger 300 gr , for target shooting = yellow box. For deer hunting I use the Berger Elite 300 gr bullet= orange box. Both bullets weigh the same have the same Ojive measurements and the bearing surface is the same. I am not 100% sure about OAL,SHRTSHR . I measure to the ojive and record that in my log books. My Ojive measurement is 3.010 I think. Im on my lab-top right now so i cant give you the OAL of the 338 lapua Imp . right now. If I remeber I will post it tonite when I get home. Its 2 40 Pm in the Alabama sun right now andd it HOT!! My guess on Overall length= 3.900 Oal =Guess!

Thank you for the info. I have the Whidden pointing tool but have never used it. Was curious if anyone had tried it on game. I am shooting the OTM's and at distance do not feel they would open up on game either.

If you do not mind my asking? What powder and how many grains?

Old school program. Exbal =Nightforce Optics. And I keep log books of EVER shot I have ever fire. Use Pvm-21 for FPS and ES. I use 105 grs of RL-33 for 3025 fps. My Ojive measurement is 3.010 and my OAL is 3.860.

Last few Bartleins I have got have been FAST! My 338 imp. Is= Stiller Tac 338 Long Action, custom 50 moa base, 28 inch Bartlein Cylinder Bore, custom break, .370 tight neck PTG reamer used, Nightforce 5x22x56 MLR scope ,( I have 97 moa of travel up) Jewell trigger, and Mcree Stock. I have a better H-1000 load . My H-1000 load gives low ES and 1/4 moa groups but is only 2950 fps or so!

Would you happen to know your case capacity? I am about to start with reloader 33 in a edge + p. Just going to compare your capacity to the edge case. Thanks in advance.

I am not 100% sure what you mean by case capacity? Do you mean water? From what I have read and been told the 338 Lapua Imp. is 125-130 gr. of water capacity. I have only used 2 powders. RL-33= 105 grs is perfect for me. It fills up to the neck junction with a 6 inch drop powder funnel. My OAL length is 3.880. I only single shot. Im not at ght now , but i think the other load of H-1000 is the same way. You get near 100% fill. You cant hear the powder when you shake my loads their full! I think this is why I have very low ES. MY 10 shot ES is like 8 fps. Hope this helps.

Water or reloader 33. I shot a couple of rounds up to 106. It took slow pouring to get it all in the case. That was with Bertram brass I am going to try a few pieces of Remington to make sure the brass isn't hiding too much pressure. Yes after 104-104 I cannot hear the powder when shaking. No problem. I use a 6 inch drop funnel myself. Its seams to work well with the 338 Lapua imp. cases. I might could get more powder than 105 grs but at 3025 fps with a 300 OTM berger I am very happy.

Congratulations on your rig.

Your case capacity and final load are in line with my 338 LM Improved. My RL-33 Load is 105.5 gr. It gives me 3,000+ fps from my 1:10, 32" Bartlein.

If they ever start to deliver powder again, you'll get the same velocities (3,000+ fps) from V.V. 570 using a lot less powder (100.0 gr for me).

In my rig, Retumbo shot very well but never got above 2,950 fps; same for H1000.
