338 edge question

Hey guys quick question. I'm considering rebarreling a 700 long action into a 338 Edge +P. My question is about COAL. My action/chassis is setup for detachable mags, running the 3.850" accurate magazine. That allows a cartridge to be about 3.76 (ish) for COAL. I know most of the Edge's are set up as single feeders, but since mine is already set up as a repeater, I'd like to keep it that way. What COAL are the 300 gr Bergers being run at in the Edge cartridge? Thanks

The Edge +P is loaded to 4.00"+ to achieve optimal performance. The standard Edge, which is plenty capable, is probably a better fit for a 3.850" OAL, but it'll be tight with significant jump to the lands if you intend to keep it a repeater unless you intentionally chamber it short. DE specs an OAL of 3.920" with a standard chamber and a 300 Berger. The 300 SMK can be loaded to a shorter spec of 3.795".

might want to call defensive edge before +p standard Edge <--since its already close to max fill say 90 grains . Throated version 4-4.1" my 105 grains RL33 which takes advantage +p chambering . Majority powder 97g-99 2930-2980 still breaking in

You might be suprised at your accuracy even with a big jump, but you will lose considerable case capacity seating to mag length. I run mine at 4.110" oal, single load- pita to eject if you don't shoot it.

That's the first thing I thought.
Wouldn't a .338 RUM +P basically have the performance of an Edge?

I think a 338 rum pushing a 300gr pill usually runs around 2600 fps. +P should get it in the mid to maybe High 2700's

Are you saying a 338 rum+P with a coal of around 3.76 pushing a 300gr bullet would be well over 2900fps? That sounds like a great hunting setup!

I guess it depends on the particular rifle and load. My Edge ran around 2750 for years with H1000, until RL33 came out and it added another 100 fps. My .338 RUM is running around 2600 fps with RL33.

Every 338 RUM I've built runs a 300 gr in the 2800-2850 range and the 250 at 3100 fps with H1000 or Retumbo. I haven't ever had anyone want an edge rebarreled back to an edge, everyone has been rebarreled to a RUM or a Lapua.

26-28 in barrels mostly Brux on the 338's some Hart's.
