338\" 300g SMK

Was thinking about running some numbers for 338 RUM and the 300g SMK. What are you guys getting velocity wise out of the standard 26" barrels. Is 2800fps reasonable? Just curious. Thanks.

25-06,i know of a few fellas who wildcatted a big belted case(cant remember what the parent case was) and necked it to .338 and shot this pill out of 30" barrels at 3000 fps(50 pound benchrest type gun).just one word, awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!how heavy is your gun?i would want a heavy gun to shoot a 300 grain pill at 2800 fps.turn your hat sideways when you shoot

Fairly sure you won't get 2800 out of a 26" tube. I get 2900 out of a 300 case necked to 338 and a 30" tube. I would guess that 2700 is a lot more likely. Good luck.

I would agree with Shawn on this one. 2800 fps will be pretty hard to reach in a 26" pipe with the 338 RUM. Guess it would depend on if you wanted to reload your brass after the first shot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif!!

Wildcat Bullets offers bullets in the 275 to 280 gr range in ULD RBBTs. You may want to look into these. THey are a good medium heavy weight bullets that offer great BC and velocity potential in the 2800-2850 fps range in the standard 338 RUM. This by the way is plenty of velocity for extreme range shooting with this class of bullet.

Nothing wrong with a 300 gr ULD or SMK at 2700 fps either for that matter.

I ran the numbers for you on the quick load program
300MK 338RUM
with various powders 2650fps is the best i found.

I have a 338-378wby imp. that shoots these 2750fps .250moa at 300yds with a 26"bbl. (Light carry rifle)

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I dont have the rifle, just was curious as to what one could expect. I was maybe thinking of rebarreling to the 338 but I dont know, I think right now, its a far off thought. I just wanted to run the numbers in a ballistics program to compare to the 30 cal bullets. I am getting about 2625 with 300 smk in my 338 rum with 26" tube. fun gun to shoot! those big 300's really let you know when you hit something. You might want a brake on the gun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif they have a little recoil in a 10 lb gun!!!!!!!!!!!

In my load book it says 2750 fps for the 300gr SMK out of the 338 RUM I haven't shot mine thru my cono. yet but I have them loaded to 2750 fps.

Untill you seriously start going with the very big, very heavy 338's past 1500yds I think the fast 30's with the right bullet is a better choice.

Charles, thats almost what I'm thinking. Currently shooting my 300 RUM with 210g VLD's and am quite happy. They are shooting around 3000fps. At 1200 yards, I have something like a little over 1100lbs and 1400fps. The 300g SMK at 2700fps has about the same fps, but has almost 1500lbs at 1200 yards. So basically the 300g just hits a little harder. The big 300g also drops a lot more. Wind drift is almost identical. I still think its hard to beat a 300 RUM with at least a 200g high bc bullet for around 1000 yards. I have no way of rangefinding anything past 800 right now, and the only way I know that "white rock" at 1150 is because I clicked untill I was on, then looked at the charts. Right now, I can say I cant take full advantage of what the 300 RUM has to offer me, so I will probly just stick with it and use the 210g VLD, 220g SMK, or 225g ULD. Those are my 3 bullets of choice for when I rebarrel. On a side note, I went yote hunting this morning with my 300 RUM and some of the 210g VLD's. My dad and I took the foxpro out and within 5 minutes of our first stand, we had a dog running our way. IT was pretty foggy, and visibility was limited to about 250-300 yards. Pretty crappy day, but hey we still had a dog running in. Not exactly long range, but when she stopped at 118 yards, she got way layed by one of them 210g VLD's. I hit her right in the shoulder, completely destryong the offside and almost ripping the whole shoulder off. IT was just hanging by meat basically. I would say the hole was 6-8 inches. There was fur everywhere and it literally almost lifted and flipped the dog when the bullet hit. One of the coolest things I have seen in quite some time. My dad was impressed. That makes coyote #50 and I couldn't have thought of a better rifle/bullet combo to make it happen. DOnt think I will have any problems with this bullet opening up on deer. Just thought I would share a little hunting trip this morning. Thanks to all who replied.

How are you figuring your energy and fps at range 'x'? What I'm getting at is what is the BC you're using on that 210?

I sure wish we could get together a list of the various BC's for Richard bullets on this site. Seems like we ought to be able to compile a list between all the folks that are using them now.

Maybe I'm coming at this wrong, but I like to 'plug the numbers' into my ballistics program and see what kind of drift and energy a bullet will have at range before I invest the time and money it will take to come up with a good load. So, I'm a little reticent to buy some of Richard's bullets without seeing some BC numbers that we can have a fairly high degree of confidence in.

Well I just figured that since my 200g AB load shot 3100 fps, that a 210g should shoot around 3000-3100fps. Also, during load testing at 200 yards, the 210g Bergers were only like 1/2" high, so I knew the velocity was fairtly close to my 3100 matched to my 200g AB load. Usually I would be cronographing those 210g VLD's, but its only because its to cold it wont work. However, I just figured that my loads were shooting 3050fps, I plugged that into my ballistics program, along with a BC of .640 and went shooting. I zeroed at 200 yards, and then went straight to 525. I was only 1 click off at 525. I then swung over to that "white rock" way over there about 1150. My first shot was about 1 ft low. I put about 5 or 6 more clicks up and then proceeded to hit 2 of my next 3 shots, with the 3rd being just slightly high and right. I think all 3 woulda killed a buck or bull for sure. I just pluged and shot. This bullet is not one of Richards, its a Berger VLD. Berger advertises the BC to be .640, and thats what I entered. Seems to be pretty **** close to me, especailly for not cronographing to know exactly what my velocity is.
