I used to have a 338/06 back in the 90s really love the gun it was my very first custom rifle ever had built don't really remember what powder I use back then just looking for a little guidance. I just picked up my new 338/06 and I'm going to be shooting 200 to 250 grain bullets out of this gun any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My favourite powders are 760, H4350 and RE19.

    H4350 is awesome with 200gr & 225gr pills. 760 is a close second.

    What barrel length you using?

Mine is 24", started out at 26", didn't like it, so trimmed it back.

    Cheers.

H4350 works well in a straight 06 and is a major contender in my 338/300wsm. Which isn't too much over a 338-06ai.

I settled on H4350 for mine and the 225gr Speer SBT. Now, I must admit that H414 shot pretty well for me also, but only when using magnum primers in conjunction. The difference between the 2 powders was nearly negligible so I just stuck with H4350 which I use in more than 1 rifle.

I have the 338-06AI and IMR 4320 shot best in mine. I tried H4350, IMR 4064, and Varget also, but 4320 was the clear winner.

4320 excellent in the 338-06 until RL 17 was tried

Mine really likes the 200gr Speer Hot Cor, with H4350 it runs 2746fps. The 200gr AB runs 2688fps in mine.

760 produces similar velocities and accuracy is very very good too.

I mainly use 210gr Partitions these days, they kill very cleanly and don't ruin much meat at all.

    Cheers.

I second this. My 338-06 is my favorite all around hunting rifle and RL17 has given me great results. VV N550 works well too.

338/284 … appreciatively same in terms of capacity .. I have used 4895 with really good results with 200Gr. BT, back when Nosler made them, and other 200 & 225 pills .. similar performance as 338WM . 24" Shilen Barrel ..

338-06 200gr 223CFE.jpg I really like the 200gr bullets with this cartridge.I am using a WLRM primer in all my loads. That 180gr seems to be able to get around 3000fps,the 200gr around 2800fps and the 210gr around 2725fps or so.I was able to get it to shoot good with the 4350 powder. The 210gr Partition bullet is a harder to push than the 200gr Accubond of Ballistic Silver Tip.It seems to pressure up a little quicker so keep that in mind working loads for it.That was one reason I went with the 200gr Accubond.I can easily get 2800fps and a better B.C.,so I figured I wasn't giving up too much to the 210 Partition.I think it's easier to get to shoot well than the Partition too.
    180gr Accubond 58.0grs Varget 3010fps
    180gr Accubond 60.0grs Big Game 2940fps
    200gr Accubond 60.0grs 760
Grouped well, didn't have chronograph with me.
    210gr Partition 54.0grs Varget 2721fps
    200gr Accubond 59.0grs CFE223 2807fps
    200gr Accubond 59.0grs Big Game 2812fps
    200gr Accubond 61.0grs Accurate 4350 2661fps
