I acquired a new to me rifle chambered in 338-06. Not finding much load data for that chambering. I'd like to try bullets in the 225 grain range and with the Hornady 230 grain ELDX specifically. Anyone have any experiences they could share to get me started. Recommended powder, bullet performance, etc. Thanks in advance for your help. Steve

I haven't loaded 230 Eldx bullets in my 338-06, but I've had good luck with 225 gr pills and H4350, using Hodgon load data from their website. Velocity was a little over 2,600 FPS. I would like to try Staball powder, which they have updated load data for, but haven't gotten around to it. Hornady has load data in their 10th addition, but it doesn't include the Eldx. I found that this cartridge to be easy to work with, like others in the 06 family.

I'm running 230 ELDX in my 24" 338 Wsm at 2760 FPS with 62.4 gr of h4350. I worked up from 338 RCM data. Shoots amazing for me , really curious to see it's performance on game. The other bullet that intrigued me was nosler ETIP in 225 gr .

I run either H4350, 760 or RE19 in mine.
Since I built it, the main bullet I've used is a 210g Partition, bought several hundred 30 odd years ago for a bargain, and the other bullet I have used is the 225g Accubond.
The 225g Accubond is what I use in my 338WM's too.
I get 2750fps with the 210g Partition in my 24" barrel.
The 225 does a tad over 2600fps.
I can give you start loads from the Speer #13 manual, which is the data I use.

Cheers.

My 09 Argentine in .338-06 loves 225 gr Partitions and Sierra Pro-Hunter over 59gr of H-4350. Running 2615 FPS

Registered just to reply this post. I have a 338-06 attached to a rem700 for about 6 years. Been using nosler accubond 225gr with 52.6 gr varget behind. Speed out of a 22" barrel is 2533 (radar chronoed today) with es of 4fps and SD of 2fps in 5 rounds. It shoots clover leaves or smaller. Bought about 1000 bullets before there was eldx, but am intrigued by the promising 230gr eldx bc now. I would start a tad below 52.6gr vgt for my gun to load up the eldx (once I finish the nosler, if ever), but I would recommend start lower in yours. If I can ever achieve the same speed and accuracy of my current cartridge setup, it would extend (in theory in energy) about 50-75 yards of elk hunting distance and 100 yards for deer. Not that I will be shooting at an animal in that distance (to quiet any debate), just pure numbers.
