I have a Savage model 10 308 that want to change to 300 WSM. Just wondering what else I need to change other than the barrel and bolt head? Pretty much just talking about the bolt head and it components. The barrel is pretty straight forward but I don't know if I need to just get the entire bolt or just swap the head itself and use the ejector and and everything from the original bolt. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You would need a new bolt face for sure but the rest of the bolt would work. You could even rechamber the existing barrel, but the cost factor
might make a new barrel a better option.
Check out the Savage Shooters website, lots of opinions and advertisers there for Savage.

Yes and give northland shooter supply a call or look them up on the web. They are good people and will take the time to talk to you about everything. I have bought two criterion pre fit barrels from the for builds and could not be happier

Thanks

Buck

Rechambering is possible with a changed bolt face, but the extraction port may have to be opened just a little bit, though I doubt that .085" of overall cartridge length would matter. You would also need a magazine and follower that will feed the bigger case. You should find a reputable gunsmith and let him guide you with this project.

It would take, New Barrel or Re Chamber job, Mag. Bolt Head. Possible Ejection Port Modification, and Magazine Lip Modification. With the price of New Savage 300 WSM rifles it would probably be better to sell the 308 Win. or trade it in on a 300 WSM. Good luck on whatever you decide.

This 308 is actually my first ever rifle build, so, for sentimental reason I will not ever part with this rifle. This rifle is more a just a project and gives my some to fiddle with. I would not say I am a serious long range shoot but I do enjoy learning about it. That enjoyment stems from my cousin/best friend who was a sniper and the best shot I know.

Why not just use it as is?
Nothing at all wrong with a 308, and distances out to a thousand yds
are done all the time with them.
That's our go to gun for practice rock shooting, and teaching kids.
The 308 is as good as it gets for a shooter wanting to start l/r shooting.
Just put a decent scope with the ability to dial on it and go shoot.

I have another 308 that is more accurate. This rifle will shoot .75" all day long but my other rifle will shoot .25" all day long. Both are pretty good shooters but I always wanted to build a 300 wsm.

You've got the guns, just go shoot them.
Serious l/r target shooters would probably concur with the 300 wsm idea.
But for simply fun shooting, shoot the 308, and later you might not even want a 300 wsm.

A couple guys are forgetting that doing work on your guns is part of the fun.

New bolt nose.
New magazine or mag box.
New barrel or rechamber your 308 barrel.

I don't know how much your local smiths charge to rechamber or swap barrels. It could be $50 it could be $500.

If you are handy with tools. Get a "Pre-Fit" barrel. Rent go and no-go gauges. The other tools needed.

Rechambering your 308 barrel to 300WSM is doable. There are always things that are un-expected gotcha's. That is just part of life.

Get a new barrel a go gauge another magazine and open the feed lips and a bolt head for a magnum. I'd order the extractor and ejector for the new bolt head as well.
