308 or 6.5CM

Want to build a new rifle and starting looking at Lane Precision. I'm looking for a sub 300 yard rifle for deer and pigs. I like the 308 for many reasons and have a savage heavy barrel that was basically my first rifle 15 years ago. Still shoots well but I want a rifle I can carry in the woods for long hikes. I have a 300 WM if I even make it out elk hunting so I don't need a large caliber rifle.
So I'm looking for advice between the 308 and 6.5cm. I know the 6.5 is the new sexy round but for hunting deer and pigs under 300 yards what would you get?
I know there are a ton of other calibers out there but I'm only considering the 308 or 6.5.

Was considering GA Precision's the Crusader too but I think I want a rifle a little lighter for carrying all day.

since you don't need it for heavy game either should be plenty

In the end you'll probably put a lot of energy into the decision but it doesn't really matter both will work fine

For your use I would take a 308 everyday and twice on Sunday. I have both and both will work but my 308 just hammers pigs at 300 and in--- with a 16 inch barrel!

308 isn't going away any time soon, and its more versatile than the 6.5 if you ever need a backup elk gun.

I have both and hunt texas pigs, deer... 308 if hunting 6.5 if plinking. 308 has so many choices for ammo and will have more energy inside that yardage.

Kimber Montana in 6.5CM. Either will decisively smoke a deer or pig inside of 300yds. The 6.5 CM will shoot a little flatter with less recoil, though.

I guess it depends what's in your woods. I hike around a fair amount with a .223, but not when bears are hungry or in the rut. In my view a .308 Win is the minimum, at least a few months of the year anyways.

I would choose 308 every time many bullet weighs to choose from and not hard to load for.and out to 300 yards is very good for deer or pigs

I personally have never shot a pig, are they tougher than an elk? Seems like either of the mentioned cartridges would be suitable and readily available.

If you are handloading I would just stay with the 308 because you already are set up for it, if not either one would work well but I would go 6.5 just because it will have less recoil in a light weight rifle both are capable of doing what you speak of

308 will have more velocity and energy if shooting like bullets. The only thing the 6.5 cm has is a better bc which does not matter under 300 yds.
