Hey guys,

nothing I'm dying to do immediately - but I think I want to start looking into building a RUM to run 245s. Ive loosely considered the 30 nosler but I think brass availability on both fronts is gonna be a challenge no matter how you slice it... and if I've gotta have an issue finding brass, may as well get the big boy.

anyway, my question is of action preference. I know I could just grab a Remington action, but the thought of using a Howa or even a Bergara sounds nice - is using either of those a possibility? I know the RUM is a LONG cartridge, and running 245s it's gonna need to be seated long to take advantage of powder capacity. I think I was reading somewhere about using a 4" wyatts.

I tried googling combinations of 300 rum bergara and howa but didn't run across much.

thanks in advance

If just a long range gun I would forget the box. Been shooting a edge in a rem 700 with a follower in it, so no concern over length and runs smooth. Have one with a single shot predator too that I use for hunting . That rum with 245"s sounds interesting. Might have to consider a switch barrel for the predator edge.

I read your first statement as "noting that I'm dying immediately..." 🤣

I was like dang man! Get what ever action you want!!

I agree with the rem 700 LA. Do you have any tolerance for a custom? A defiance action is pretty sweet.

I'm open to any suggestions - I believe a blueprinted 700 from PTG can be had cheaper than a true custom but like I said, I'm in no rush to complete this build... I'm just getting together a parts list for now, then I can start slowly checking off the boxes once everything has been decided.

I do want to hunt with the rifle, so I'd like it to end up somewhere between 9-10lbs unscoped. I figure that'll put it around 12lbs scoped up. Definitely not a sheep hunting rifle, but it'd be great for hunts where long shots are anticipated/possible. Probably not going to be gaining 3000 feet every day on a hunt like that. I also don't want it to be too light because... you know... 300RUM/245gr.

I was thinking

26" barrel(either sendero or light palma) 8 twist. Probably gonna keep it steel.
MBM or CA brake
AG Adjustable stock
TT primary
Wyatts 4" box

I "only" run the 230s in my .300RUM. Wyatt's 3.825" extended box because I didn't want to mess with the ejection port like Wyatt's says. But the 245s might need the 4.0".

That sounds sexy even if it "only" runs the 230s 😂

Got a weight/picture of the rifle itself?

Seems like going the shorter route would be easier but I'm sure those 245s will eat up case capacity quickly.

Hands down a Remington action unless you have lots of the $$$ . I'm running a single feed 338 Edge , 300 bergers , with a 30 " proof , Burris Xtr 5 x 25 x 50 , way to heavy of rings and I'm right at 10 .6 pounds .
Mcmillian stock also .

I just might put another 300 Rum together for the 245 bergers !
Here is the 338 Edge .

It has killed a lot of elk for friends and family. Quite a few coyotes during elk season too. And one mule deer. Too much for mulies…

What brass and powder are you using? I just picked up a RUM and am looking for a starting point for the 230s.
