Hello everyone. I wanted to post some of my load data with my 300 WSM and get input from others who load for the round as well. I also reached out to a couple of members and thought I would post a thread for everyone to chime in if they wanted.

The rifle is a 300 WSM on a long action and has less than 80 rounds through it so far. The barrel is 25.75" Barltein 5R. I am shooting at an elevation of 5300' and temp of 75 degrees. (indoor 100 yd range controlled conditions)

Chronograph is a Magnetospeed.

Brass: Norma (never fired)
Bullet for all loads: 230gn Berger Hybrid
Powder: IMR 7828 ssc
Primer: CCI BR2
OAL: 3.255"

IMR 7828 ssc
64.5 gr
2524 fps
SD 7.0
0.36" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

IMR 7828 ssc
65.0 gr
2558 fps
SD 9.3
0.95" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

IMR 7828 ssc
65.8 gr
2600 fps
SD 6.7
0.29" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

IMR 7828 ssc
66.5 gr
2655 fps
SD 11.0
0.35" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

I also loaded a few with some H4831 SC keeping everything else the same as the above loads.

H4831SC
64.0 gr
2550 fps
SD 11.3
0.95" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

H4831SC
64.5 gr
2550 fps
SD 11.3
0.85" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

Do these velocities seem normal, low? I know every rifle shoots differently. So far no signs of pressure, stiff bolt ect. Thanks for any input as it is greatly appreciated.

Joe

My 300 WSM is well validated to QuickLoad but only with 208s. Still should be close enough to be an additional data point.

First comment, loads if IMR7828ssc 64.5, 65.8 and 66.5 good shooting and within my parameters for success. I've been using H4831sc recently, maybe I should give the 7828 a try.

Second comment, pressures predicted in my QuickLoad are all within recommended norms.

Third comment, you velocities are with ~%1 of predicted by QuickLoad. You are "slower".

Third at ~2655fps, you have a 25MOA drop at 1000 yards with ~1300 ft lb of energy. I believe this quite acceptable.

Fourth comment, In my experience, 7828 vs. 7828sc, the SC is a little slower. Tested it with Wby cases and it is predictable by.. You guessed it ~%1 slower for SC.

Last, you have lit a stick up my backside to move my 300WSM barrel to the long action and get on the program for making a ShermanShortMag on the short action.

Umm, after this project and that project and the other project... Umm.

I think I would try 215's to see what they will do. dkhunt14 on accurateshooter.com has told me you can get 230's to 3000fps in a long throated WSM with a 30" barrel using 7828ssc but it seems like it would be hard on cases. He knows a little about 300wsm's, he holds the current 1000yd 2.815" 10 shot record with his.

My COAL is 3.199" with 215 Bergers .017" off in a 26" Brux barrel on a Remington LA. Using R-26, 71grs gave me 3050fps and slight ejector marks with a group of .280", 70grs was 2990fps with 2 shots in the .1's and the third I pulled. 69grs was 2930 and 68grs was 2860fps. The 68gr load shot in the .7" range.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to see that I am running close to the QuickLoad data. I see others getting better velocity with similar loads and wasn't sure how far off I was. I know that running only a 26" barrel that I am loosing a little fps but not enough to hurt the load at 1000 yards. So far I am loving this setup! :)

You read my mind! I have some 215's and they are next on the list. I loaded two batches already but didn't post the results as I stared to low. They were as follows:

H4831SC
215 Berger Hyb
60.5 gr
2324 fps
0.4" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

H4831SC
215 Berger Hyb
61.0 gr
2354 fps
SD 7.0
0.7" x 3 shots @ 100 yards

I have some RL 17 I have been wanting to try as well.

I've been running 65 gr. of the h4831sc behind the 215 berger in my 300 wsm. It has a 24 inch benchmark barrel plus break. Don't remember how far off lands off the top of my head. Three shot groups have been running between .4 and .6 at 2655 fps. Chronographed at 2000 ft. on a 65 degree day

Idaho,

Are you running a long action with your 300 WSM? I have a stock Savage 12 with 26" barrel and I am seeing 2840fps at Sea Level behind 67.7gr of R26 with COAL 2.965 with the 215 bregers, but it is warm. Only seeing .5-.7 MOA. I have the ability to run a ~3.1" COAL, but then I'm single shot. Not a big handicap since the mag is only 2 rounds...

Mine is a long action with a Wyatt center feed mag box and it was throated as long as I could to use 215 Bergers. I'm at about 2800' where I shoot.

I have some more loads ready to go for tomorrow and will post results.

Will have some 230 Berger Hyrids with IMR 7828 SSC, as well as some 215 Bergers on top of both H4831SC and RL17.

I will be especially interested in the result you get with the h4831sc and the 215 bergers. Hopefully you will post the results. Thanks dj

Your results with the 215 berger and h4831sc using the same grains was pretty close to my results. The outfit that I purchased my rifle from did load development on my rifle. They advised that it would shoot 2700 fps. My results have been closer to the 2650 mark. Thanks for sharing, have a nice weekend. dj
