300 win mag help

I have a friend that got a rem 700 from his farther years ago and has never shot it. He is wanting to know about what kind of scope he should put on it. I told him the best that he can afford. But really should he put double mounts? or just a good quality mounts? His budget is 500-800 dollars. Really looking for a scopes that would hold up to the recoil not so much as what power. I do not have a gun that big or would have that much recoil so i need a little help. This gun has no muzzle brake on it.

I have a Leupold Mark IV 4 X 14 X 40 with Seekins rings on a picatinney rail. (Ken Farrel's) The rail is bedded, Glen's rings are great and my adjustments have also been repeatable on the Lupie. It always holds zero.
