300 prc switch

Ive been running and loading for 7mm rem mag for a while now in my remington 700 bdl. I'm very fond of 7mm rem mag but this dang 300 prc is calling for me. I'm planning a hunt in new zealand for next year and 500 yards is about where I call the line for my current rifle just do to the weight limitations of 162 grains. I can shoot heavier but accuracy quickly falls apart. I was told when I hunt in new zealand I can expect shots ranging from 200- 1100 yards. Ill be helping reduce the population of hogs so im not to concerned if I take my 7 mag but I don't want them to suffer if i have any say in it. Would the 300 prc with say a 212-245 grain pill work for said distance or should I keep it within a shorter range? I know I'm capable of taking the shot as ive regularly hit still out to 1,000 yards with my 7mag but the energy for an ethical kill isn't there when it gets there. Atleast not for my liking. Several ballistics calculator apps say with a 162 grain sst at 2950fps it's only producing 312 footpounds of energy at 1,000 yards. I also believe the velocity of 900 something fps isnt enough for expansion. What are yalls thoughts on all of this? I'll add ive never took a critter past 508 yards do to me wanting to keep above 900 fpe.

A 215 to 245 is more than capable.of taking hogs at 1100+.

I will say this. In my opinion, the 300PRC just doesn't quite have the HP for 245s. You won't gain anything over a 215 or 230. 230 would be max in my opinion. In fact, the 230 Hyb is my choice for my personal 300PRC.

But, it thumps a lot harder on the shoulder than a 7RM or 7PRC running 162s to 180+. But it also thumps harder on game at distance as well.

7mag and 162s is more then capable of taking critters a long ways out. I've seen way more animals DRT with a 7mag and 168 bergers then probably everything else combined from point blank to over 1K.
I have a 300 prc as well and it hard to argue with the performance and accuracy of the round, if you want a new rifle, go for it but it's definitely not needed

Edit: just saw your shooting SST, maybe try a high bc bullet like the 162 eldx/m or 168 Berger. That'll help a lot at distance

A few years back i hade a 300 norma mag i regretfully let go of so recoil is something I'm very familiar with lol but thank you for the info on weight class. Ill definitely keep that in mind.

I'm not familiar with eldx/m bullets. I heard they're good for high bc but never liked that they're not optimal when it comes to expansion at longer ranges. As for the 168 grain bergers I'll definitely look into them. Never loaded anything with bergers bullets so ill do some research and see if I ignore the 300 prc and run my baby or go with the prc. Ive got 10 months to figure it out so plenty of time to dreadfully wait in excitement.

You don't need a .300 PRC for hogs at 500-600 yards. Your 7mm with a heavier, higher-BC bullet like the 175-180 grain ELD-X or 168 grain Berger VLD will get you 600-700 yards ethically. I've killed pigs at 620 yards with a 168 gr Berger out of a 7mm Rem Mag. That load had 1,100 ft-lbs and 1,700 fps at that range. Plenty lethal. Your accuracy falling apart with heavier bullets suggests a twist rate or bedding issue, fix that first.

Twist rate is a 1/9.5 had the action and stock beaded i get same hole groups at 100 yards with the 162 grain sst behind 68.6 grains of h1000 and federal large magnum primers. Even when I tried sierras line of bullets with heavier bullets accuracy starts to open up dramatically.
