300 PRC and Barnes 190 LRX

I have a Christensen Arms Mesa in a 300 PRC. It has a 1:8 twist barrel. When I broke the barrel in I just loaded up some Hornady 200 ELD X with H4831. Plus this load was also to fire from brass. I thought it shot great for a new gun and a load I just threw together. But I was wanting to get a load made up with H1000 and Barnes 190 LRX. The LRX's is going to be used on an upcoming Aoudad hunt.

I started load some up starting at 76.9 of H1000 in .5 grain increments to 82.9. I shot them today and I walked away feeling disappointed. They shot all over the place. @ 100 yards. Before today, this gun has 101 rounds down the pipe.

Does anyone have a load that you use in your 300 PRC with the Barnes LRX's? Or any suggestions?

I do want these to be mag fed, too.

How far off the lands are they? I went through the same thing until I pushed them off the lands. Ended up shooting hammers, but same exact problem as well.

I'm not sure. I haven't purchased a modified case to measure it yet. I have got to think they are not even close to the lands. My CBTO is 2.935"

I just checked an old message. The oal was 3.640. I think that was at .090 off the lands. It was a custom chamber I had purchased used. Hornady shows a coal of 3.650 with their 212 eldx. So not far off. Worth a try once you get the case. Maybe you are to far back. I had trouble with this projectile I didn't expect because 168s were so easy to load in a .308.

H4831 isn't listed in the Barnes data, but that powder covers a wide range of standard bullet weights in 300 PRC so it'll probaly work here. Quick QL using defaults and H4831SC to give you a rough idea, but you should look for more info/maybe someone here will post a second QL calc before relying on this fully:

Hodgdon has H4831 listed for 190gr bullets. This is the reason I used it when I fire formed my brass. Didn't want to waste H1000 on fire forming.

Pretty sure it's the Noser AB that Hodgdon lists, be careful mixing up cup-and-core/bonded info with monos, they don't directly interchange.

If you have it, try it. I use it in 300 RUM and it works great. Haven't used it in a 300 PRC/30 SM yet though.

Curious what velocity were you getting with 80-81 grains of H1000 and the 190 g LRX? I've got 50 rounds through my 300 PRC. 30 rounds were just to use up some 168 gr TTSX and A2700 powder. But I tried 20 rounds of H1000 with 199 gr Hammer Hunters and got promising results. Just started to show some faint ejector marks at 80 - 81 grains. Heck, the 168 gr TTSX were good too. Those were unfired brass so I'm going to try again after sizing and prepping. You might give the 199 gr HH a try.

H1000 will perform better than retumbo in the PRC, especially with the lighter pills. You would be better served using RL26 out of your PRC. what was the accuracy like? My experience with several CA was not the loads but the barrels... could be the gun.

Are you dead set on that bullet? I'm not a fan of those for accuracy either. Maybe try the new cx bullets
