Well I was bored, waiting for new 24" barrel,so I loaded up some 208 amaxs in win brass, win WLR primer, neck sized, loaded .020" off the lands. Shot these in my marlin xl7 22" factory barrel.

I loaded to test pressure and somewhat a ladder shot at 100 meters.

56.5
57.0
57.5----
58.0---- All these 57.5,58,58.5 shot in a nice group all
58.5---- touching.
59.0-- sign of slight hard lift bolt
59.5-- same as above, hard lift bolt
60.0-- max hard lift bolt with slight swiping.

Didn't test any higher.Looks like need to be shot out farther to 200 yards or so. I see a good node around 57.5,58,58.5.
My speed was really slow and need to retest, I was getting 2530 avg. really slow.

you might want to try some re17. I have a tikka 23" '06 with 1:11. Its got a little bit of a roomy throat and I hang the bullets out near the rifling. Right around 54.3 re 17 has me cranking about 2650 with no apparent pressure problems. The powder also works great with the 208 amax and my 308. It's a little 20" vtr and a work up of right around 48 grains (again a very long throat on this one) has me doing right around 2500 fps.
Re17 seems to be a wonder powder for both cases with the heavies.

kraky,

Thanks for the reply. I went and retried the load again.Confirmed slow speeds of 2550 fps with 58grs. Rl-22. I have 1 lb of RL-17 setting on the shelve . I'll give that a try.

Hey trailrider,

Let us know how the reloader 17 works for ya,

I was looking at pushing some 208 amaxes through my 06 that I am about to start playing with... Unfortunately the only 208 grainers I could get my hands on were hornady's new hpbt's (I think they have a slightly lower bc than the amaxes but their website still doesnt have a bc listed for them... Anyways I was itching to get loading so I took what I could get)
I have a jug of rl17 just sitting here that I picked sometime ago that I never use In anything so I guess I'll give it a whirl too...
I've read a couple other posts of guys using h4350 with good results on 208 grain bullets so I may try some of that too...
