Hi Team

I have a custom Built Dan Hardy 280AI Long Range Rig with 26" 1:8 Barrel

Im Shooting 180 Berger's using 56.5gn of ADI powder and only getting 2640ft if I go to 57gn and the primer is starting to crown as it flows into the firering pin although the primers are still slightly rounded (is this too hot?)

I stopped at 57.5gn which cronyed at 2675fps before going back to 56.5gn
I was really hoping to get at least 2700fps can I push to 58+gn or do I need to see if The 168gn will give me less wind deflection due to its farster Velocity

At what velocity do we need to get the 180 bergers to before they out preform the 168s in the 280AI in Wind deflection

Thanks

I've played with the 168 Bergers, and got up to 2950 fps with a 24" barrel. I think you should be able to easily get 2750 with the 180's (maybe even 2800, especially with a 26" barrel). I just haven't tried it yet.

Not really familiar with ADI powders. As I understand it, it's the Australian version of Hodgdon. I'd probably look for a slower powder, maybe AR2217 or AR2225 (I believe those are equivalent to H1000 and Retumbo). Maybe I way off base on the powders, but I still believe you should be able to do better with velocity.

I can get 2930 fps pretty easy in a factory 22" barrel in my 7 SAUM using 160 grain Accubonds with Magpro powder.

What powder you using

When I was playing around with 180gr VLD in my 280AI I used H-4831sc and I have 1/9 twist barrel, live above 7K.

Sorry should have said Im using ADI 2213SC (equivalent to H4831), ADI manual says 55.5 max for 175gn projectile in 24" barrel is 2651fps, im 180gr 56.5gn and getting 2640fps with 26" barrel (is my crony out!!!)

Be nice to be getting another 100fps or am I just being to cautious on pressure with the primer being slightly sinking into the firing pin hole in the bolt??? (Edges still rounded)

Manual also says (Max) 59.0c of AR2217 (equivalent to H1000) says 175gn does 2675fps

Would be nice to spend more time shooting than load development but I need to be getting something desent or Ill be better off shooting 168gn bergers at (hopefully) 2850+fps

You would thing that barrel do better than 24", maybe different lot # powder maybe it's in barrel.

Might give gunsmith call see what he thinks.

The primer flow issue could be just oversized sleeve and have nothing to do with pressure ....very common.
I would fire a factory round and see what the primer looks like. If the primer flowing is a bother have it sleeved problem solved.

If you can get it, try IMR 7828 SSC. It will be perfect for your .280 AI with the 168-180gr bullets.

H4831SC and 168 Berger Classic Hunters work good in my Cooper. I will try R26 next to see if I can get a little more speed. I shoot the Bergers at 2885 fps. Could push it more but it shoots good there. 24" barrel with Nosler brass.

I hit pressure at 2950 fps, but 2925 is OK with RL26 and 168 grain Bergers. 2885 is pretty decent with H4831sc, that's a very consistent powder. I'd probably be pretty happy with that (I haven't tried it myself in the 280ai).

Good to know about the R26. Maybe I will just stay with my load and H4831SC. I don't shoot this gun much and don't need a few more fps.

I have a Cooper 52 w/24" 1/9 and it does well with the 168 VLDs. Very accurate at 2900 fps and a bunch of RL22 stuffed in there. What powder are you using?

Anyone tried H1000 with the 168/175/180grainers in 280ai? I too will be loading a new 280ai very soon. I have 7828SSC, H4831SC, R19/22/25, H1000, MagPro.
Thx!
