270 wby is still the king !!

I have been a die hard 270 wan fan for many years and have had a number of them and some very good ones , but I recently acquired a 270 wby in a McWhorter and the 270 wsm just can't stack up to the old 270 wby.
I love the 270 wsm dearly but I am newly converted. My load with 270 wby is a 129lrx @ 3480 fps. It's a laser beam. Can't till Friday I hope my son can seal the deal on his first elk with it.

The Weatherby and WSM really shine with the 165 Matrix and 170 Berger, I'll never shoot lighter bullets from them again having killed a good number of elk from spitting to 900 yard range with them.

when you rebarrel, I'd go with a faster twist rate. That's the one think the 270 mag lacks.

I also have one in a MK5 Sporter (270 Wby). Contemplating making it a 7mm Wby to shoot the 195 Bergers or keep it a 270 Wby and shoot the 170s. Either would be at least an 8 twist.

The load data Mcwhorter gave me was with 150vld and reloader 26.
It's a good load and chronys 3238fps.

my MK. V struggles with some of the 150 grain high B.C. bullets. Remember it's not the bullet weight, but the B.C. factor verses twist rate. I really think a 1:9 or even an 8.5 twist would have been much better. The down side is the increased fouling and a slower second shot.

I love my 270 Wea, but a 7mm Wea with a 1/8.5 twist would be great. I have always felt the 7mm Wea mag is probably the best balanced 7mm mag made. Too bad Weatherby doesn't share this opinion

I don't know if I'd call it "the king", but it is one of the faster and flatter-shooting .277's out there in common availability.

Personally I've always owned .224, .257, 6.5mm, .284, and .308 bores, so there's no real need for a .277 in my collection.

I too love the .270 mag, and it will do for most things North American. I do think Roy screwed the pooch by not going with a slightly faster twist, and maybe a little less free bore (I'm thinking half the free bore).

Still the .270 mag necked down to .264 would have made the better 6.5 mag by a light year. Always felt the 7mm mag was about the perfect 7mm mag, even though I always liked the Remington design. Yet I've often wondered just how well the 270 mag necked up to .308 or even 8mm would be. Just seems right in my book.

I agree, I think the .257/.270/7mm Wby Mag case would have been a good one for the .30 caliber as well. I don't mind the .300 Wby, as I use those cases to form for my .300 Ackley...Which is quite the beast. I, too, prefer the 7mm RemMag over the Wby Mag, because brass is cheaper, easier to find, no excessive freebore, and there's maybe a 50-75 fps real world difference between the 2. Which in my personal opinion, doesn't outweigh the excess expenses or the negatives that go along with it.

I also feel the .257 Wby Mag is a bit overbore, and would have been better had he chosen the 6.5mm over the .257. And yall know how big of a 1/4-bore fan I am... But I just think it was overkill for that small of a bore diameter.

Once again, these are all just personal opinions.
