.27 Caliber

Would like some input on running some heavy weight bullets in the 27 caliber.
1. Would be more interested in using a short barrel, light weight gun , mainly used as build for a truck gun. To grab quickly and being able to use for out of the window shots
2. preference would be 22" barrel
3. carbon barrel is not a must.
a steel barrel #4 fluted which would be close to a #3 weight,
4. 27 caliber just because it would complete my rifle calibers. only lacking something is .27 caliber
5. main use would be for whitetail, mule deer, and possible elk size game
6. Berger bullets, absolutely love using
7. 150'or 170gr. would be my choice of bullet weights
8. Open to all ideas and guns that have been built similar to these specs.
9. Reloading is not a concern. have been reloading for many years
10. Would prefer to use head stamped brass, If used on a guided or kit of the country.an example would going tonMexico, and not having the stamped brass not matching the caliber marked on action/ slash the barrel

• Do not know that much about the 27 sherman's
• Would like to be able to push it at 3000 fps
• Open to any an all opinions and personal experience with build similar to what i am wanting to build

270WSM on a long action! Be sure to get a fast enough twist barrel - 1:7.5 twist would be my recommendation. Maybe 1:7 if you are interested in lead free (all copper) bullets.

Consider 6.8 Western if you are looking to save weight and length with a short action.

I've only loaded for a coupe 6.8's - they send 160gr bullets around 3000fps out of a 24" barrel.

270wsm runs best at about 3.1" OACL with the heavy bullets.

Setup this way the 170gr EOL's run about 2950fps from a 24" bbl

With a shorter tube, you'll have to step down in bullet weight, or up in cartridge size to hit the 3000fps you mention.

27 Nosler might be the way to go if you are dead set on performance. There is nothing wrong with fire breather in a short barrel, it's not not something I am interested in, but it's your project - build what you want!

A 22 inch, Barrel ( Min,.. IMO ), in a .270 wsm, is Fine, w/ a 1-8 Twist and 160-170 grain, Bullets. ( Norma and ADG Brass, is Avail )
I've Killed, quite a few, Big Game Animals, w/ a .270 Wby and a .270 WSM, using, 24 inch Bbls (10 twist ) and 140 or, 150 grain Bullets,..
@ 3,100- 3,200 fps just, "Hammered" chit for, a couple of, Decades ! ( even Elk )
The High BC, 160-170 gr. Bullets, could Only, Be,.. BETTER ( except, a little more, Recoil )

I went with the 277fury 22" 8t AR, but not loading @ 80k, only up to 65k for now with the hybrid cases.

Have a 270 wsm, selected it to have commonality with my brother and father in law. With the widespread prevalence of xm actions thats how Id go now. Im not chasing the heavies mainly due to coal limitations, well that and my last two barrels were shorties so it was very much a rifle with compromise.

Brass is as available as anything not 9, 6.5 creed or 308 the last few years.... not great but more than a few guys making brass.
