Whats about the maximum killing range on groundhogs; foxes; LG rabbets...etc..etc with a 222 rifle.

Im juggling scopes around here and dont really think I need a 20-24 power on a 222 and that a 4-12 power would do me fine???

Your ideas??

I had a 222 recut to 223. I ended up selling it to a friend, several years later I've got it back, he felt it didn't shoot very well. I couldn't remember it shooting as bad he was getting. It finally occurred to me it was a 1-14' twist. It doesn't like the newer, longer bullets even in the 55-60 grain range, but the 40-45 grains are great. I think I'll go down farther in weight to the 36 grain Varmint grenade, try to keep the splat factor up. I'm unsure what that will be but 200-250 yards doesn't seem unreasonable.

I can't say how that affects your particular situation, but I think a 4-12 would do most of what you want to do with a .222 or .223. I don't feel handicapped with a 2.5-8x.

My Dad's main short range (1-300yd) varmint rifle is a Remington 700 Varmint Special chambered in the tack driving .222 Remington. Its dead nuts accurate and puts the hurting on groundhogs with 50gr V-MAXs and a good load of IMR 4198. His is topped with a straight 12x Leupold with fine duplex and its nothing to see a groundhog's eye and put those crosshairs right on it at 300yds and dot his eye out along with pink misting the hog's head! I really like it because of its amazing accuracy, light recoil, and great performance on varmints. On calm days hits can be made out to 400yds and Dad's farthest kill with it is an impressive 500yds for this little cartridge. Hope this helps!

Jud96: WOW!..That is something for sure and big thanks to both of you guys for the replys. I think I can safely order a new scope today then!

Much appreciated!

I'm happy I've helped out. Hope you get a nice scope and everything works out great' Good luck with your .222!
