My son finally sealed the deal this weekend. I am pretty impressed with the 123 ELDM performance at short barrel (16") 6.5CM velocities.

1/4 away shot entered at the front lobe of the liver and traversed the chest cavity length wise into the lungs and heart, making soup and minced meat. It left liver and lung chunks throughout the 30yard blood trail.

I didn't do a full necropsy, so I don't know retained weight or where it ended up. But I did find a large amount of blood shot at the neck, at the front of the right shoulder blade, when I lopped its head off; so I assume the bullet or part of it made it to that location. Pretty good penetration considering. 18-20"? You be the judge.

I did cut a hole in the ribs to retrieve what was left of the heart and inspect the lungs which were no longer a solid mass.

The shot was 110yards (2600+fps impact velocity?). At that velocity, and with the damage that presented, it's obvious to me that the bullet fragmented. That said, penetration was sufficient on a large dense pig that I'll keep that bullet in his mag for a while.

Congrats to your son on a well placed shot. I'm running basically the same setup, just out of a 260REM. I'm giving up on the 123 ELD-M for pigs. Understand, all of my shots are done very fast either out of a pickup window or off a Ranger at running targets. Lots of hits on pigs that size without many good results. In fact, I've probably only recovered 2 or 3 out of I guessing 75 or more? This really isn't a bad thing as all I'm trying to accomplish is getting bullets into them, but it's still a little disheartening not to get a recovery. The only reason for sticking with the 123 for me is its one if the few bullets I've found that rifle will shoot. For whatever reason, this rifle is very picky? In the middle of working up a load using the Berger 135 Classic Hunter. I've got some experience with this bullet and seen it perform on a 200#+ Boar at 744yrds and a 175# whitetail at 622yrds, very impressed with the terminal results.

I'm interested if you get anything else with that bullet in the terminal performance? I'll post pics if I get something with the remainder of my rounds? Think I'm down to 8 left?

It sounds like we do a lot of the same. That one was shot off the cab of my truck. He just happened to be a leisurely fella and gave my kid time.

I do wonder what it would have done with a solid shield shot, and I'll update as more data is gathered.

You might try 108 and 123gr Scenars. I found the 108s (also from this rifle, but with me shooting) to hold together more. Always exits, but no pigs this size. I actually switched him to the ELDMs looking for a bit more dramatic terminal performance, but I didn't expect that drematic or for its first test to be that big.

I've had excellent results out of a short barreled creed on whitetail with the 123 eld. Picture perfect expansion, internals were destroyed. Caught on offside hide on all 3 deer.

I'm sure they would be like lightning bolts to deer! Just not enough pop for pigs.
