To hunt with Standards or Monos...that is the question.

Just remembered a 2nd moose shot with an early version Barnes X 338 210gr boat tail copper bullet. Some Barnes bullets came with a blue coating back then, as I recall. These were blue. Shooting a 338-378 Weatherby. 425 to 575yds. My shooting prowess wasn't spectacular. He was trotting directly away, so only opportunity was a Texas heart shot. Bigger issue was I was forced to take offhand shots due to terrain and obscuring vegetation. Alaska moose are BIG.
Hit the moose twice in its rear, while he was trotting straight away. But neither hit center of mass. As soon as he slowed and conditions allowed, I was able to find a sitting position. Then delivered a good broadside hit, and that bullet did its job well.

All in all, never had any nasty surprises or disappointments with Barnes copper bullets. Farthest shot was the bull moose at ~630yds.

Yup isn't that the truth 🤷‍♂️ the GREAT shot know it Alls . lol 🤣
You can't be talking about me. I missed the crap out of a doe yesterday with my 5.56 AR. With somewhat of a decent rest. I was in my truck. The deer had seen me I knew she wouldn't hold for long. I rushed the shot. Bad things happen when I rush. And what's worse, I know that. She was waving her white flag as she left. I've searched for excuses. I got NONE !

That's one of them there Texas miracle shots. A dead deer running away. Hardly ever see it though. 🤣

One of my most favorite hunting loads ever is my 257 wby with Barnes 100 ttsx at 3600 or so fps. I was only buying off the shelf wby ammo. Id like to try it with some of the modern monos now that I reload. It hits harder than a 30-06 imo. High speed mono = awesome
I have the same .257 Weatherby 100 TSX load. I'm at 3500fps with a 24" barrel. It's one of the original BackCountry's and it is one accurate you know what. It has the Weatherby freebore which is no issue in the accuracy department.

Shot my biggest mule deer with it and a horn breaking 6 pointer we had on the ranch up near Shamrock, TX. Shot the MD at about 300 and the 6 pointer at about 90. That was the ugliest whitetail I've ever seen. Looked like Jimmy Durante with rebar like antlers. He was fairly small as they go up there, but he'd take on anything with those clubs he had on top of his head.

This one was very healthy leaving. Zero Bullet Wallop. May just be the lords way of telling me to use more gun. It's not really my choice of calibers for deer but that gun rides on the dash of my truck or on the hump and gets used for nuisance critters. Or if a gunfight brakes out in the grocery store parking lot, again. I wasn't there for the last one thank goodness. Really doesn't matter what caliber I use if I don't hit them.
