Looking to built a precision rifle

I was going to title this one, "What is the best short action, precision cartridge for a build", but...then figured it would go on to at least until Christmas and 500 replies. . And...with that "BEST" added it would probably start a few keyboard, strong discussions between the opinionated members here before it was done. I am thinking either a 6mm BRA, or a 6.5 Grendel, but I am not certain about the Grendel?? The latest that I have been told is the 6mm Creedmor is something people are starting to sway towards, however....by Creedmor is a tough one to swallow!! This probably is going to be a "one-piece-at-a-time build due to the cost involved; budget around $3000 or maybe a little less without the glass. I want to do something with a heavy barrel, short action rifle, something that would be a pleasure to shoot for a day at the range. The furthest range that we have is 300 yards so that is a consideration when asking for member's opinion.
Why hit the easy button and do 308? Get a Zermatt Barreled.action from pvs and find a stock you like. Easy peezy.

Honestly, 22LR in a PRS22 style rig works to 300 yards!
Yep, as noted in #8. My range has a rimfire shooting club that shoots in the 200Y and 300Y ranges. They have some serious set-ups, though.
I am not one of those people who believe that one rifle fits all; rather, I am purpose-driven. I am not trying to convince anyone to do the same, but to me, this is a separate purpose, and what rimfires are for. I have done this with .22 LRs, al always have them with me when I am at the range. It is a pleasure to shoot all day, and the burden cost for a brick or two, or more, is worth it. I recently invested in .17 HMR. I got a suppressor for it this week and will be taking it to have it threaded on Friday.

I built my latest precision short action rifle around a 6.5x47, using my chosen Lapua Scenar L bullet, it is more accurate than anything else I have built, off a bench, and awesome off bipod and bags prone.
Couldn't be happier with the outcome.

I just don't see all the fanfare around the 6mm. At my club, these don't do nearly as well as the 6.5mm's and 7mm's at our 600 metre line.

Cheers.
I have two 6.5X47 and really like them. That cartridge is about the easiest to find an accurate load for with multiple projectiles. My last build was a complete custom with premium components with the purpose of shooting 1000 yard matches in the Tactical division. Gun weighs 20.48 lbs and at 100 yards it will put 5 shots in a ragged hole about every time.By the way, there has been a new world record set in LG at 1000 yards…..and yes it was set with this cartridge.

I just attended my first 200yd benchrest match yesterday. It was either 6BR or 30BR. I was shooting 708. LOL
Put some distance on that past 600 and you will see most of those guys with some variant of the 6BR such as BRA, Dasher, 6 X 47…… in other words a bit more case capacity.

Let me get all my 200yd shots in 1" and then I'll go see what them 600yd dudes doing! 🤣

Be prepared to make those same or close to it 200 yard shots at 600. And going from 600 to 1000 is another ball game. 🤣
Yeah, this 200yd match was enough to have my cockyazz tail tucked! I just found this range, and I'm absolutely cooked now! They got centerfire & rimfire benchrest, CMP Highpower, CMP Vintage. I'm gonna be eating Ramen noodles...

Oh no! I sense a "hook" about to be set and you found a new rabbit hole. lol.

Just a range toy? 6creed gets my vote, 6GT if you want something that's got slightly less recoil, but I'd want the most for my money. 243win (or 243AI if you're a reloader) actually has slightly better performance than both inside of 500 yards...so don't take it off the table just because it's not the "new hotness." Things can change...you might have 1000 yards available to you in the future, so don't pigeonhole yourself just based on current circumstances.

Well I joined the club the first day after the vintage rifle match! Which I didn't do terrible with my Enfield No4MK2. I rolled around on my shop floor a few days prior trying to remember the finer points of Marine Corps Marksmanship with the loop sling from 30yrs ago!
38 min drive. Like I said, I'm cooked...LOL

The look on the match director's face when I told him this was my first match ever, and I got this British Enfield...He was really nice, but I could tell he thought he was gonna have some work on his hands. No shooting coat, spotter, flimsy mat. I shoot my 5 sighters, first shot hit low, went 3 clicks up on the ladder sight, then and couldn't see anything else on the target. On the way down I'm telling him I hope I hit the daggum thing. To my relief we saw: 10X, 10X, 10, 9! Bwahahaha! Then I shoot the highest score in that first match. I know a couple shooters were kinda miffed...

So, I'm glad I went the next day and shot that 200 benchrest. My hats went back to fitting my head...

Awesome brother! The main thing is to approach it with the intent to just have fun. Little by little the urge to be more competitive with respect to the crowd will drive you further into emptying that wallet……hence "rabbit hole". lol.
