What is the purpose of carrying a knife

To respond to the OP in regard to a lightweight knife while hunting, I usually carry a Morakniv Garberg in my pack (actually on the pack strap, inverted). I also keep a DMT diamond hone in a pack pocket along with a small Swiss Army knife for it versatility.

Like so many, I've been carrying a pocket knife since maybe third grade (I'm 72), usually a Case Peanut, today I don't go anywhere without a knife, I don't know how many I have and probably should sell most of them but I have come to appreciate pocket knives with a clip as a necessary tool when I was on the street and I carried a Benchmade SOCP on my vest that I could access with either hand JIC. For the moment I carry a TreeBrand Trapper in a small sheath on my belt, it's a little cumbersome to open compared to the OTF and flippers I carried for so long but I'm not usually in a hurry. I have maybe six or seven Benchmades, I think they're overpriced and haven't found the heat treat to perform the way it should in premium steels (Magnacut, S90V etc.) same with Spyderco and today I have come to appreciate Kershaws in Magnacut which replicate Zero Tolerance except for better steel. I like the MKC 52100 but haven't found them superior enough to spend the money for one. I had a Blackjack similar to what Bradmoto pictured, maybe I still do in a box somewhere but it was a very good blade and I like it. I could go on and on, I like knives, alot.

Thought I'd share a little more purpose…..

Top- my grandfathers farm knife - handed it too me plenty time when feeding cows in winter and stuffing hay in the hammermill when grinding feed.

Next - my dads hunting knife - I think he used it more for cleaning fish.

Next - dad got this late in life to skin. Never got to use it.

Bottom - when I was 8, dad and my uncle Bruce took me into gun shop. I liked this knife because it said scout on the handle. It was a used knife. Dad said we couldn't afford it.
2 months later he handed it to me for my birthday.

Most of the good ones I can't show. I've given those to my two boys.

The purpose of carrying these every now and then is to honor your father
Those are priceless

I carry various lock blades with a pocket clip and also my Dad's old US Navy utility knife in a pocket. Always need a knife on the homestead.
Hummm NAVY pocket knifes—⚓⚓⚓️. Or something Like this? carried this for Years, Sailing, and something like but different in Service 1963/67

Grandpaw wasn't really blood kin to me , was my mother's stepfather and my hero, I have since learned he had horns and had done some horrible things but never once did he ever let me see that side of him.
I have his old tree brand boker with worn down blades, he would whittle with it every day on a piece of cedar wood, never remember him whittling on any other type of wood.would be a pile of cedar shavings wherever he stopped or sat down.

I dont even rember the model but I've carried this Benchmade every day for years . I used it when I was a Lineman for years. I had dropped it a few times from up on pole or in bucket. It was missing screws . The serrated edge cut rope after pulling in a lead like butter.
I sent it to Brenchmade . They replaced screws . Reversed belt clip for me and sharpened and shipped back for free .
As far as hunting knives I carry at least 2. Always have my Outdoor Edge folder with guthook. I like being able to swap a blade and you can sharpen them also . And you can't snap the blades like Havalon's.
I do like Havalon's for caping though.

Looks like a Gerber Gator

Definitely a Gerber….. to verify "Gator" or not, would require me to get off of my butt, traverse 4 flights ( 2 down and 2 back up) of stairs to make a positive ID! 😜

However, I do think that you're correct!

On another thread pertaining to workouts……doing those stairs several times a day should certainly constitute a form of conditioning for hunting season! 😜 memtb

Here's teh guy I use, carry it everywhere every day, clips inside my pocket and I don't even notice it. Its lightweight but has the stout build that will do it all. I use this exclusively to field dress, skin and cape and pretty much anything that needs sharp blade or pointy end work. It has a quick opening peg that I can open this faster than any switch blade using only one hand.
