Competitive Shooting

I've been shooting competitively for more than 50 years in various kinds of formats and was also the range master for a decade at one... IHMSA XP-100 in 7mm/08 to 300 yards, long range groundhog Benchrest matches with a Borden TPE in 6 PPC, 100-500 yards and my favorite Varmint Benchrest Rifle with a variety of 700 actions, BATs and Borden TPE's all in 6 Dasher.... this match can easily have 250 guns present and involves targets from 850- 1000 yards...

I havent been there in a long time, but that looks like it might be Ridgeway?

Yepper skepper....they have an amazing amount of different matches all the time...

I shoot in the Friends and Family events - ours. My brothers, friends and cousins are a hoot. They're a silly bunch and we have all sorts of fun together - especially with rifles and golf clubs. I used to shoot DCM matches years ago - those were fun. I miss high-power events.

Own a rifle range in Iowa.
22 Benchrest, Varmint 4 Score (paper silhouette), Fclass Midrange, PRS a few matches, Muzzleloader Classic, Trap,

We also do lots of fun matches at the range for cash. Cold Bore, Par 31, PIG,

A little late here but Highpower is the way I get rid of money, across the course is my favorite some silhouette also good fun

Fclass...about 98.9% of the time it's 1000yrds. I still hit some 600yrd matches occasionally throughout the year. The main cartridges currently are 300WSM, 7/300WSM, 7/6.5PRC and 6Dasher. In the past I have shot 6BR, 6BRA, 6SLR, 260Rem, 260ai, 6.5x47L, 284win, 284 Shehane.

NRL hunter, been running 25 creed and a 260 AI, will run a 25 saw in a few matches this year.
A little PRS 6 dasher for that, but I will do some gas gun matches this year. 6 arc and 6 gt on those.

I've done couple of matches in rimfire PRS and it's been great fun and taught me a lot. Such as:
- There are people who are really good at shooting both accurately and fast
- Avoiding stupid mistakes brings you more points than new gear
- It's not the arrow, it's the indian
- A good indian with a poor arrow still struggles a lot
- Even the best screw up occasionally
- What works for someone else may not work for you.

My worst was a two-day match at which I was the last of all, luckily not by a great margin. On the other hand, there's been couple of matches where I've been well above the average. I really hope to manage to compete more and to be honest, with this little actual PRS practice it would be odd if I'd be closer to the top

You are absolutely correct with your Indian analysis.

Back in the very early 50s my father joined a smallbore rifle club.
And my older brother, myself, and a year or so later my younger sister got involved also.
After going thru a few different target rifles, we ended up with two model 52 Winchesters.
Different models, one being a lighter barrel version than the other.
But the lighter barreled one was the mast accurate for some reason.
Anyway it was indoor 50 ft for the most part.
4 position, prone, sitting, kneeling, and offhand.
10 shot targets with 100 being a perfect score, plus Xs counted also, and made the difference between two perfect score targets.
Even after several years, i rarely shot a perfect score prone, my father never did shoot a perfect score prone.
But along came my younger sister, and she was doing it within a few months, consistently.
Within two years she became the national junior girls small bore champion, using iorn sights with the same gun i was struggling to shoot a perfect prone score with while using a Unertle target scope. lol

Ya I shoot small bore 4 p growing up.When I was in my twenties I started indoor pistol, small bore.Which was fun, you shot one handed.I also shot indoor bow leagues for years and years.Thats where I met Steve from Hammer,he was a very avid archer at that time.

I shot smallbore league, like a bowling league but with rifles, it was very satisfying to watch youngsters progress. A young person would shoot with us and I would watch and think , nice kid but I doubt he or she will ever be able to shoot but if they stayed with it, and most did, after a year or so it was very likely they would whip us old guys. One starting day my buddy Dick wasn't there so I called him that night and asked where he was and he replied "I'm tired of getting beat by little girls" I always try to get parents who like shooting to get their kids involved, it is amazing how fast they learn position shooting and kids are competitive so that pushes them along and very often become very good shooters. My grandsons have been shooting with me whenever we can and two summers ago I took them to a 600 yd match shot prone with slings and they shot two 20 shot strings in the 185's or so and one 20 shot string each that was 197 or so. I told them to figure out if they could what they did different on the good string and they did, this last summer they shot in the high 190's for two strings and each shot a 200 for one string, made me happy and they are twins so the only thing in the whole world that matters is whether you beat your brother or not. They also have shot a couple of across the course matches and did well around 740 or so, one shooting my iron sighted AR15 service rifle and the other shooting my M1A with irons also. They also shot next to the black powder silhouette fellows who allow vintage service rifles to shoot with them so my boys shot one of my garands for chickens offhand at 200 meters and pigs prone at 300 meters and turkeys prone at 385 meters and rams prone at 500 meters, very good fun. All 3 of my grandsons and my daughter shot in the cowboy 22 silhouette practice match, and the two twins have shot in it every time they are here, and my daughter came close to beating the twins. Fun to watch

New world record 1000 yd. heavy gun benchrest record set at the Williamsport Pa. club last week.
Ten shots slightly over 2 inches with a perfect score with 8 xs.
Shot with a 6.5x47, using Berger bullets and a Brux barrel.
