Pay to play as a non resident

Well, we got sticker shock buying a 7 day fishing license in Utah. It more than doubled in price from $41 to $91 since last July. Across the board increases for everything else hunting related. Just in time for the high fuel costs. We, the older guys in our group, can slightly afford it but I know that non resident fees are going up across the west to offset each states expenses.
We usually have a big group of fishermen go on this trip so that equates to $3700 in fishing licenses plus whatever we spend at the small businesses in this area. For the younger families this will be a much bigger hit than us retired guys. We have been on this trip for 50 summers with 30-40 fishermen.
Seems like sports on TV are figuring out their pay to play (watch) schemes. At some point this is going to eliminate the masses from participating which is the only snap back people can do.
Seems to be across the country in any manner of things. Costs are far outpacing the money supply and I would think it's going to end up hurting everyone and the businesses along the way.

So cost of a 7 day fishing license increases by 120% in one year? The states cost go up that much?
Boy I wish I had a chip in that money so I could track where it really goes.
 
In Utah's comments regarding the fee increases they said the neighboring states were jacked up so they were competing. It's $55 for a year long non-resident fishing license here in AZ.
Colorado is $41 for a 5 day non-resident
New Mexico $24 for a 5 day non-resident
So that blows a hole in Utah's reasoning on fishing fees. Then there's hunting fee increases that are off putting. Arizona non resident hunting is prohibitive for many. I think it is nationwide on hunting fee increases generally

Why pay double, triple or more? The game is the same, deer, pronghorn, elk they don't care if you are from out of state or local. The wife went with me a few years back on a Durango hunt and the weather was nice and we decided to go trout fishing. The cost of the trout license shocked me, but we did catch some nice fish. Would be less money to go in a nice restaurant and order a trout dinner.
Now that I am no longer working, I must think about if and where I might want to plan my next trip. Before I just paid for the hunt and did not worry about the cost, now I must plan my budget well in advance.

No one is being forced to play, period. One must plan regardless of status.

I paid $74 for a 3-day NR fishing in SD next week.

LOL welcome to the real world
The demand for these resources and opportunities has increased dramatically since covid
Resident think that since their tax dollars are going into managing these resources. Any non resident that would like the same opportunity should pay a premium.

Of course it is... Residents are upset that some hunting draws are once in a lifetime at best in their home state. Draw points creep has gotten out of control. The only way to control it is by raising the prices.. You can't just go and apply in every state for everything anymore... And that is by design.. You now must choose the ones most important to you, and invest what you can.
