308 powder advice help helping a friend

Then IMR 4166 it is as I have the most of that on hand.
I will try to pic up some IMR 4895 and more Tac or 2520.

Thanks to all who helped with their suggestions.

For me, Win 748 is the powder for .308. I have a few .308 rifles and it works great in all of them.

CFE 223 has been my most accurate powder with Berger 168 gr. RL15 has been my most accurate powder for 175 and 178 gr bullets thus far. Remington model 700.

168gr sierra matchking 43.5gr IMR 4064 Fed 210M primer federal gold metal match brass COL 2.810 have yet to see a 308 that would not shoot this load extremely well

I have found my 308 will shoot just about any suitable bullet and powder combination in a respectable fashion. It even shoots factory cheap Winchester ammo reasonably well. The best accuracy has come with IMR4064 42.5 gr. with Berger CH 168 gr. This is in a very light Browning HC Speed 22".

I find it interesting on how Powders work with different calibers and bullet weights. You would think that since the .243, .260, 7mm08, 308 all have the same parent case, but all cannot use CFE 223 or H-4350. You can use CFE 223 in a .308 and .223, but not listed in a .260. We basically purchased CFE-223 to supplement H-4895 in our .204s and .223s. Didn't think about using it in larger calibers when purchasing.
I am glad that we stocked up on several different powders since before the Obama admin. We basically bought powders for certain calibers, but there is a lot of cross referring so if you run out of one powder you can use another.
H4895 was the "Powder" for the US Government in WWII and used in the 7.62 (.308).
Mr. Hodgdon got his start by purchasing a Railroad Car full of surplus 4895 after WII. If it was not for the "Surplus 4895" we wouldn't have Hodgdon powders today.
