advice on .308 powder

Thanks for all the help guys. I will look at what other powders are available to me. It's the sps varmint 700 factory stock I presume I will also need to change it to get the best from the rifle.

varget and IMR4064 for bolts are well proven. I use H4895 in my m1a and does well, but not greatest for my howa bolt. I tried 4064 and it seemed to like it better in the howa. Varget seems hard to find for me without ordering it.

You can glass bed the stock and help it a little, but if your serious...get a better stock. My best load in my 700 sps tactical w/20" barrel is 46 gr VARGET, 168gr AMAX, CCI large rifle primer and seated to 2.830 COAL in LAPUA or NOSLER brass. Still fits in the factory mag, and shoots sum MOA in my gun.

*MAXIMUM LOAD* probably start at 44gr and work up. Maybe even less if your not sure what to look for as far as pressure signs. I get about 9-10 loads out of a brass and my primer pockets get loose.

The same powder in Federal Gold Medal Match ammo and Military sniper ammo.

But Varget and IMR 4895 are also good in the 308 Win

Fed 210m with IMR

Dont over look Vihtavouri N140 I shoot 43 grains pushing 175 SMK in my 308 and it is consistently shooting under 1/2 MOA. It is 1.5 grains over max but never had any issues.

Has anyone tried IMR4166? How does it compare to IMR 4064, Varget, RL15 and CFE223? I will be starting load developement this weekend. The barrel is 24", 1-10 twist 4 groove. The throat is long for 210 bullets if needed. Looking for great accuracy 1/2 moa or better out to 800 yards but wanting to hunt with the rifle aswell.

IMR4064 and Varget are my two favorites. I use it in 308 and 243. I usually try loading something with IMR4064 then come back with an equivalent load with Varget and it shoots better.

I know a guy that swears by 4166. I just bought some to try in my 5R, but will be awhile before I can so I am anxious to read your results !

I finally got 4166 to group well in my 308. I'm at the bottom end of the load range - 39grs with a 168gr AMAX but it groups well.
