I am looking at buying a 270wsm for the wife as an elk gun. She shoots the 243 very well already, but I am curious if anyone else out there has any insight on what the recoil is like. I know I have shot a 300wsm and the recoil is nothing like that of the recoil of at 300 win mag. We went to the store and had her shoulder a few different rifles. She felt comfortable with the Tikka, Bergara and Savage. Any info is appreciated! Also, the 6.5 is not an option. Thanks

Having owned a 270 WSM. I'd say a 270 WSM shooting 130-150gr bullets is similar to a 308 Win with heavier bullets in the 165 to 180 grain range. I say that as I owned both at the same time, in the same make/model of rifle, shot on the same day. 308 was slightly lighter weight. I feel manageable recoil is a real positive for the 270 WSM. I've thought about adding another one to the mix lately.

The 270wsm benefits more from a brake than a 308. Dad just bought on this spring and for what it does it is mild compared to a 7mag with the 162-8 class of bullets with the 140's. His is shooting the 140 gamechangers @ 3280 while my 270win shoots them at 3140. His is a boss gun so recoil is actually a bit lower than my vangard but it could be much better with a beast or other side discharge brake by alot.

Don't get any of those bavarian, hunter type stocks...got two friends that replaced their Sako bavarian due to the recoil being unmanageable. Shot my buddy 270wsm with brake and thumbhole straight and it is pleasure for anyone to shoot

I know we won't put a brake on this rifle as it's a hunting rifle. And if we stick with the 270 wsm I think the savage 110 because of the adjustability of the stock to better fit her.

I would compare it to a 30-06. I have a Browning xbolt medallion in 270 wsm. Its a sweet rifle. I've killed elk, Mule Deer and Black Bears with it.

what type of bullets have you used and results on the elk?

So...I bought this gun three years ago right before I got a promotion that put me on the road - so I havent had time to reload between work and kids etc lately. I have only shot Federal Premium 130gr accubonds and Hornady precision hunter 145gr eldx. Elk, Mule Deer and black bear were all killed with the 145gr eldx. I shot it at 430 yards quartering away. Bullet entered behind the rib cage and never exited - totally jacked up the vitals.

My mule deer was a 330 yard shot, quartering slightly towards me. Blew through the shoulder and turned the vitals to jelly. No exit. They remind me of the berger bullets, which I love.

B.bear, elk, wt.deer, mule deer that either I shot or was present when hunting were taken with Barnes 140 TSX in 270WSM and none walked or even moved from the spot.
However distances were not that far to be considered long range shots by any means. My point is 140TSX packs enough punch and creates shock that I never found lungs in one peace when dressed any of those animals.

Here's a quick comparison of recoil energy by the math, assuming a 9 lb. rig (rifle, scope, etc.). Take as a rough estimate, as these numbers can wiggle based on powder used, velocity attained, etc. But it should give you a reasonable basis to compare. Of course, felt recoil can be further affected by things like good recoil pads, brakes, etc.

I've got a brake on my 300wsm. Like shooting a lightweight 308. Bystanders don't like it but neither does anything I've shot either.

I have 270 and 300 wsm , the 300 is a custom with a break and recoil is less then a 243. The 270wsm is the Blackshadow model by Winchester and was my go to rifle for everything until I got the 300. The 270wsm was used by several kids that weighed less then 100lbs without a problem, 3yrs ago I changed the stock out to the Hogue over molded stock and it lightened up the recoil even more so. I know just about all of the WSM calibers have liked the TTSX bullets also. Mine likes just about anything I have put through it
