Short action .284 Winchester opinions

hey all. I have a remmy 700 SA chambered in .308 win. I've been Kicking around the idea of rebarreling it to .284 win or other sub .30 caliber round. And no I don't want a 6.5 Creedmoor. Obviously the rifle being chambered in .308 it doesn't have a magnum bolt head and I'd like to keep the gunsmith bill to a rebarrel and blueprint. Was thinking of a 24" barrel instead of the 26" plus break that it has now. I'm hoping to keep the recoil reasonable and don't want a muzzle break. This would be a longish maybe 600-800 yard max deer/antelope gun. I've already got a .300 win mag to cover elk. Any thoughts on the .284 win in a SA or options for other calibers?

I second the 7mm 08. Great bullet selection and I've been wondering when hornady will try and reinvent the wheel again and come out with a 7 creedmore. I bought my wife a 260 and she likes it. 260 rem would be another good option pluse getting a 260

.284 Win has become very popular in F-Class. Norma makes brass for it. Sounds like a good idea to me! Do a 9 twist and use 180 Bergers maybe!

Magazine length in a rem SA would be my concern with a 284 win. What bullets are you hoping to run?
On a separate thread a member necked a 6.5 cm up to 7mm and with 180s the coal was over 3". A 284 is longer than the short creedmoor case.

Have you given the 6.5 4S/SAUM much thought? I had a GAP built 7-08 and loved it but sold it to a close friend because I found myself reaching for the 6.5. The 6.5 will out perform most rounds in its class and does very well on barrels with H1000 and feeds well on short actions.

You know I had 6.5 creedmoor for a brief moment, I couldn't fall in love with it, I felt it was a little undersized to launch 140s, I know there is other bullets to choose from but I didn't see the hype. With that said one of the smiths I use absolutely loved his.

My thoughts on the .284 in a SA were that magazine length would be a limiting factor. I think I'd be looking to run the 168 VLDs perhaps just because the short action mag box would be short for the 180s.

As far as the 6.5 SAUM id rather stick with a standard bolt face rather than a magnum. I'm not really looking for a hot rod either more of a daily driver type cartridge. The .308 I have really likes 168 ELDMs but they really just don't buck the wind well.

the 284 win on a short action is not very efficient you would be better off with a 7-08. my 284 all bullets good for long range will be over 3.1 inches

Yeah mag length is going to be a problem with the 284.

If you want more juice modify/ change out your bolt to a magnum and make it a 6.5 or 7 Saum, or for lighter recoil you could try 6.5 PRC

Sounds like in a SA .284 isn't gonna work well. So far 260AI and 7mm-08 are the two likely candidates. I'll have to think on that. I already have stuff to reload 7-08 since my wife's rifle is chambered in it. But 260 AI sounds interesting.

Anyone have any real world experience with the 260AI?

It will be close to the 284 in performance, but short enough, although still will be limited in the mag.

well I am by no means an expert, but if you want to mag feed and shoot the 180s, a short action will definitely hurt case capacity, which the 284 does not have an excess of to begin with

I think the 284 win is an excellent choice.

I have been shooting the 284 win since 1983. Oldest is a Ruger Tang Safety. Had a SA model 700 for a while.

The SA Rem 700 used a Wyatt's mag box which lengthened the usable OAL to approx. 2.995".

IMO this cartridge in the Rem with the Wyatts box should use a 168 gr or lighter bullet. If the bullet is seated deeper than the neck shoulder junction it won't loose much performance. In my current rifle, a SA tang safety Ruger with a 23.5" barrel I get 2835 fps with the 168 Berger VLD and 51 gr of RL-17. OAL is 3.050" ( mag box has been lengthened) I could have worked up for more velocity but it is super accurate at this velocity so I stopped. Besides my 257 Weatherby is THE LR coues wt rifle don't need to push the 284 for that task. Did use the 284 to shoot a coues wt in 2015 @ 450 yds with the 168 VLD for nostalgic reasons. Rifle weighs 7 3/4 lbs and recoil is not an issue.

Best powders for this cartridge are either H4350 or RL-17. Have killed quite a few animals with this chambering over the years. Elk, coues wt, mule deer, javelina coyotes and jackrabbits. Used 100 gr X bullets, 120 nosler ballistic tips and 120 X bullets, 140 ballistic tips, accubonds and partitions, 150 bt and partitions, 160 partitions and the current bullet the 168 VLD.

If you decide to use the 284 win order a custom reamer to your specs. AND buy some superior Norma brass that was a special run for Bullets.com. It is priced for closeout at $77.70/100 here:
