Good data in this thread. I have had a 6.5 g for years but bought a crappy scope and gave up will try the 8208 load data have a Saturn matching barrel and bolt tjx for info

Yes, great thread. I picked up a bunch of Grendel brass at the range last week. That and 375 Ruger...?! So, why 6.5G and not a 6G? I'm sure this has been hashed out, but if someone can provide a streamlined view from your perspective, I'd appreciate it.

I have a 6.5 Grendel and it's performance is much better than the small cased round looks like it would do. Funny, I have been a reloader for many years and this is the first round I can't even equal, much less exceed, the performance of factory ammo. I can get the speed but not accuracy; the accuracy, but not the speed. It is a mild manned round to shoot and I think perfect for grandkids! I personally think a minimum of 22" barrel is what you should go with, and I prefer 24". It helps both in recoil (which is minimal anyway) but the bang is further away from sensitive ears! It does make a difference.

Just got back in town from another turkey hunt...Been trying to my 80yo father on a gobbler. He taught me everything I know about turkey hunting, but he has done about everything you could to sabotage the hunts...talking, staring at his hands and not looking for incoming gobblers, snapping limbs while gobblers are 50 yards away gobbling at my calls...just not paying attention to what he is doing...throw in three missed gobbler with 4 shots...the longest shot has been 18 yards, the shortest about 15 yards...he is on his second shotgun, blamed the first miss on the gun. It is too much gun for him now really, so I let him use my wifes youth model 20ga pump...two more gobblers missed, one with two shots...that gobbler went back to strutting after the first shot!

I know I'm high jacking my own thread, but we guided spring hunts, dad made and sold turkey calls for years and has a very impressive list of personalized calls he has made. We even filmed and produced the first spring time hunting video featuring Rio Grande turkeys in the late 90's, 98 or 99 I don't recall for sure.

Man I'm jealous of seeing that many turkeys. Past 2 weekends I have seen 1 hen and heard zero birds.

We were surrounded by gobblers yesterday morning. We had at least 6 gobblers, gobbling. One was roosted 75yards in front of us...we had a 6 foot drop onto a shelf that is a strut zone 30 yards in front of us and he was on the shelf...he wouldn't come up that rise so we could see him because my dad started moving around...he made a ton of noise...he only gobbled two more times as he moved off to our left.

Any we heard about 100 gobbles yesterday morning alone. But that' not uncommon with Rio Grande Turkeys.

Back to the thread, got shipping email on the barrel yesterday. I don't get a good signal on my cell at my hunting lease so I couldn't call them nor check email.

Bought a interarms mk x I think it was in 6.5 ppc years ago. Local gunsmith said it was basically a Grendel but I've not heard of one before or since. Would it work in this platform?

Yes it will! They are both based on the old .220 Russian case, which has a .445" bolt-face diameter.

With a 20" 1:8 twist heavy barrel on it, that would be one slick shooter! Always said that the Grendel would shine more in a bolt-action platform, where you can really stretch the bullet's out in the magazine well to get the most performance. If you do build one, be sure to post up your build.

At the time I was just dabbling in reloading and couldn't find any info on the 6.5 version so parted with it. Having kids of my own now and with more experience at the table it would nice for a first gun for boys

Back from the turkey woods!

We parked the truck on a high Ridge over looking the draw the turkeys roost in so we could hunt our way back to the truck.

We go in setup on long clearing right in between two roosting areas. Get one hot while he is still in the tree. He gets down and starts our way but moving left...gobbling very regularly at just about any noise. Then he shuts up...I start calling a little more agressively...when out of the bushes a coyote comes charging right at us. Dad has the gun...I'm just calling for him.

Well he doesn' see it until it almost back in the woods 75 yards away...at its closest he was 30 yards right in front of us.

No more gobbles after that...he must have went to the gobbler first then us...

What happened when we got in the truck really says it all.

I close the door and reach for the key...80ish right in front of the truck is two gobblers walking down the road right to my truck...how we got in without being seen, who knows but they were soon 50 yards away.then turned into the brush...just couldn't do anything with them after they left.

Soon got home and my barrel was there so I assembled it and it looks great! Here is a pic of the barrel with my $16.00 muzzle break...

FYI- that's the 1.5" self adhesive dot in the bull area...

Looks you guys were right. This barrel doesn' shoot very good. But to be honest, it does have a milspec trigger group that the pull weight is high.

I'm pretty good at "country boy bore sighting" and normally on paper just by looking down the bore at 100yards.

The very first two shots were about 10" high, one inch right! Pulled the third shot...I wished I had not found the first two. 4th shot was with a half inch on the first two...nice 3/4" group without might pulled shot...just over an inch all 4 shots.

Read some guys on the Grendel site saying they do a 5 shot clean for the first 20. Well I cleaned at 4 and it never shot as goose as the first 4! I wish I had took a picture of the first group just to prove what the first 4 looked like.

It MOA of dead deer at at 100 yards which is truly all I was after, but reading many post about how good some barrels shoot, I had hope this one might do better.

It is without a doubt the easiest bore to clean I've ever touched. Wet brass brush (Hopps #9) followed with a wet patch a few minutes later...two clean patches later...the next wet patch looks like it'' never been in the bore! Clean!

I have a couple ER Shaw barrels and one Douglas that I give up after about 20 patches where I'm still getting a tiny amount of blue on the patch!

Cold bore shots were all dead on the bull, but the followup shots were loose. On 4 different targets the cold bore clean barrel shots were very close to the same POI...the target above only has one cold clean bore shot on it...

Weird shooting little rascal. I was short on time so I didn' get to shoot it like I really wanted too. The above target, I tried to see if a fowled bore would shoot beter, but nope!

I hate to hear that. I would try getting your money back, and then putting that towards a better barrel.

You do not realize that with that barrel, which I am sure after seeing the picture is a BCA, you are already ahead of the game. It actually groups shots before you get 50 or so rounds down the bore. Keep shooting it because it will probably get better, mine has. After 100 or so rounds mine is starting to average 1 to 1 1/2" 5 shots groups depending on the bullet and load on a regular basis. Mine really likes this load which is a MAX and should be worked up to. Hornady case, CCI-BR4 primer, 28.5 grs IMR 8208, 120 Sierra Pro Hunter, COAL 2.250 and I use a medium Lee Factory Crimp which is accomplished by screwing the die down to the shell holder until the fingers completely close then backing the die out 1/4 turn. This load shoots great in both of my Grendel's that have different make barrels. What ammo were you shooting? Both of mine HATES Hornady factory 123 SST. I have not even been able to get them to shoot handloads very well with this bullet either.
