300 Norma Magnum Hunting Load & Starting Data

Curious to why some of you want to go to the shorter barrels. To me your defeating the porpoise for the faster 30 cals. to shoot farther. Shorter barrel we all know are going to make any gun shoot slower. Your just about down to the 30 RUM now. This is a LONG range sight I thought. And the 300 Norma rivals the 30-378 for long range shooting, I believe they are even a little bit faster. And the 300 Norma is what I am looking at on this thread. Haven't seen anything on the 300 Norma Imp., but I will look them up on a thread for them.

Looking at building a short barrel 300 Norma improved for hunting with 212 eldx. Already have a 26" 300 Norma improved for 230 bergers at 3060fps.

Wanting to see what a 20-22" with 212 eldx would do with the 300 Norma improved.

I am looking for another rifle because I don't have enough lol.
I have 338 allenmag, 375 CT, 2 other 338 lapuas, 7mm Allen mag, and the list goes on.

Not looking for all out speed and it would be a gun the Mtns so maybe a little lighter but definitely easier to move around. 1,000 yards or less type gun. Not that it can't or won't shoot farther ;-)

87predator is your Norma Improved ?

Why not a mid weight 300 allen xpress? I am having pretty good luck with mine and the Lapua brass is a plus.

I have a 11.5-12lb Kirby Allen 338 lapua and it's a tac driver.
Already have the reamer and set up for the Norma and 200 former 423 Dakota Lapua Brass. Of course lapua is coming our with 300 Norma brass now lol
What has brought this on was I saw gunwerks boys shooting a short 20" 6.5 prc on a stone sheep/mtn goat hunt and thought hey why not. I really like the 6.5prc just like to have a little more energy at longer ranges. Not saying the 6.5 can't do it, more so just Incase of a bad wind. I believe an animal can never be "too dead" ;-)

Last I checked, the longest recorded kill was by a Canadian with an AXMC 20" 338 LM. Is that Long Range enough for you. If you actually get out of your truck; and pack in for miles, sometimes a short tube is nice to have. Just saying...

Some good info there.

I'm very interested in the new VLD-X 220 grain offering in the 300 NM.

About as close to 230 as you can get with a hunting designed bullet.

Just an FYI the 212 gr ELD-X has a higher BC than the 220 ELD-X. It's not drastic, but it is lower for the 220. If you look at the bullets side by side, it appears that the extra 8 grains in the 220 were added to the nose of the bullet, its more rounded, not as "sleek" which looks like it hurt the BC. I know that isn't a very technical description, but I hope you understand what I was trying to say.

50 cal is back on top, and the Canadian that I saw in the sniper special that held the record using a 338 Lapua had a much longer barrel and the kill was not the first shot !

You are correct Sir, my apology. The AI "Maverick 41" is supposed is supposed to be the same specs as his issued L115A4. And it has a 27" tube. It also looks like it took 9 shots.

I wouldn't want to be shot at with either ! They are both killers, and there are some others that rank way up their too, as far as their ability to reach out and touch someone! No apology needed, but thanks anyway. Good luck hunting and be safe !

I have been told ABM using H1000. Only ABM knows for sure. I have not chronograph-ed but my trued MV is 2940 through a 26'' barrel so pretty happy with that and the ammo groups .25 at 100 yards.

Have you done any elk hunting with the 230 match hybrids?
I used the Norma match ammo with the Berger hybrid 230s on a 350lb black bear last Memorial Day, dropped in an instant with minimal damage to the surrounding area.
