Ok so I'm going to rechamber my Winchester model 70 300wsm. Its a post 64 with a short action. I have 3 other .300's so I was thinking since I'm re barreling I should change to a caliber that is more affordable to shoot. It will be just for 1000 yard or so targets and maybe antelope. What's a good caliber I can change my short action m70 to that would be cheaper to shoot

Antelope to 800, and targets to 1000, 260Rem, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5x47Lapua, 6XC, 6.5x284, 284, 6x47Lapua, 243, 243AI, 6.5x55, 6.5x55AI, 7x57, 7mm-08, 308.... take your pick!

Could I change it over to 243 or 308 even though it's a magnum now? Thanks for the imput

Sorry... didn't think of that. Being a Winchester, you will need a new bolt. Another alternative that would work would be one of the WSSM calibers. It would work really well in your action, but the typical 7, 6.5, in WSM or SAUM is also a good idea if you don't want to get a new bolt.

Yeah I really don't want to change the bolt. So without changing a bunch of stuff what could I change it too

I am liking the 243 wssm for some reason I'll look into that. Do they sell factory ammo for that

You don't want to do that. The 243 WSSM and other WSSMs were doomed to history the day they were designed.

Since you have a mag bolt face and short action you are really limited.

You want something different than a 30, I'd suggest a 270 WSM

Here is one more vote for a 25 wssm. This caliber in a Browning or a Winchester seems to bring the highest prices on Gunbroker as compared to other calibers. It's also my favorite of all the wssms.

Think 25-06 in a short action. Up to 3300 fps with a 100gr bullet. Good for everything from 'yotes to deer. Tiny recoil. Hard to beat for a handy truck gun.

Enjoy

I don't know that it would be cheaper in the long run but if you don't mind rolling your own, the 6.5 WSM would be a great choice, or you could go factory .270 or 7 WSM......Rich

If cheaper to shoot is a goal, then leave it like it is!

when you add the cost of a new bolt and $500-600 for barrel and chambering, inexpensive will not be in the equation.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I called ER Shaw and they are at shot show till tomm. so i will try again. Looks like I am going to just send them my action and have them install one of their #4's. Thanks for the link they look like they do nice work and for the money I cant complain.
