Re #17 in 7 WSM

using 64.0 gr. RE 17 in .300 wsm with 190 bergers should get you some where close for the 7 wsm. RE 17 seems to be a good performer

Has any one tried Re#17 in the 7 WSM ?

Howdy,

Here is a copy of a post I did some time back detailing my experiments with RL17. Hope this helps.

"In my 7WSM I shoot H4831 and H4350 with a variety of 140 grain bullets. I tried RL17 and had the following results... THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT I RECOMMEND YOU TRY THESE LOADS. They just happened to be safe in my rifle, 24" bbl Win. mod. 70.

Nov. '09 50.6 degrees F Sierra 140 gr. GameKing #1905 Reloader 17

62 3103 fps ES 23 poor grouping
62.5 3131 fps ES 22 1 1/4 group @ 200 yards
63 3111 fps ES 12 1 1/2 group @ 200
63.5 3173 fps ES 2 1.08 group @ 200 two in one hole, three others horizontal, wind I guess
64 3222 fps ES 37 1 " group @ 200
64.5 3240 fps ES 26 3/4 group @200

April '10 97.7 degrees F same bullet and powder Temperature test
63 3207 fps ES 7 0.35" group @200
63.5 3243 fps ES 37 1" group @200
64 3281 fps ES 44 1.5" group @200

In the three different loads I shot in both tests, for an increase of 48 degrees, velocity went up: 94 fps, 70 fps, and 59 fps while ES went from 12 to 7, 2 to 37, and 37 to 44.

Interpret this data anyway you wish, I just shoot it!"

Hope this helps in some way, and good shooting.

Thanks for posting. Seems like Re#17 doesn't really shine in the 7mmWSM With Re#19 I was getting 3300 fps 139gr SST. Re#22 does well with 160gr A-Maxs.

Howdy,
Hold on Iron Worker. In my rifle, RL17 was a full 150 fps ahead of both RL19 and RL22. My best advice to you is to try it...IF, your not too bummed out by the temperature instability in MY rifle. Try it! You might like it!

Jay,
All these are from the top of my head. All info is in the shop and its raining so I'm not going out there for a while. If I'm too far off, I'll re-post a correction later.

I use enough H4831SC to get 3105 fps with 140 gr. bullet. That load gives me ES under 25 and SD of about 11 or 12. When I really clean up all my brass to the best of my ability, especially inside the neck polishing with a brass brush and steel wool, the SD goes down to about 8. I have shot consistent 3/4 minute 5 shot groups with this load up to 400 yards. Most of the time I'm in too big a hurry to do this though. Bullet is 140 gr. Accubond or Ballistic tip.

I use 63.2 gr. H4831SC with 168 gr. Berger. This is a PRELIMINARY load. So far, 1/2 minute.

My rifle is very, VERY, VERY, sensitive to the barrel warming up. Two shots within 5 minutes is about all it will handle as far as grouping goes. I recommend that you let your Mod70 really cool off inbetween shots. I get best accuracy and best ES and SD that way.

Hope this helps, and good shooting.

Is it a factory stock bbl ? I have a #4 contour Brux on mine I wish I bought a thicker bbl. Think I'll load some Re#17 up in 139gr sst and 162 Amax.

Howdy,

My barrel is a stock barrel; however, my smith and I took it off, cut off one thread, re-threaded the shank, and re-chambered it. So, it is a hair shorter than stock, but more or less blue-printed.

I think you will like the velocity of RL17 with the 139 sst. I've not tried it on anything heavier than some OLD 150 scirrocos and 150 Nosler solid base. I could not get decent groups with either bullet, so I relegated RL17 to 140s.

I have to ask, why do you wish for the thicker barrel????

Best to you and good shooting.
