New Member seeking advice for rifles legal in Alberta

Hey guys,

So my question is that I have been looking up on a few rifles but have no luck in finding any info saying if the rifles are legal in alberta and even more improtantly can be used for hunting. Some that I have in mind are the .408 cheytac or in the .338 lupau.. Any info on this would be great or any info on other rifles that could be purchased for hunting but have the range and tactical look that the cheytac has. As for range I'm looking at any where from a few 100 yards up to 1000+ yards since the terrain where I live can be very open. One last thing is price isn't a matter for me but if cheaper than great! No ones hates a good bargain lol.

From my understanding in reading other posts, .50 BMG of any type is prohibited in Canada. The .338 Lapua and its variations are permitted. I could be wrong, but pretty sure I'm right.

As far as caliber, 338 Lapua is all you will need from 0 to 1500 yards using a 300grn BTHP of some type. Hopefully one of your Northern brothers will chime in.

Thanks Tank. You wouldn't happen to know of any good makes in the .338? I really like the AR look or tactical if you will. Once again money isn't really an issue. Thanks

Welcome to the site.

I'm hunting in alberta to and no restriction up upper limit for hunting.
Just minimum is 243 cal for hunting and the rest you are ok.

Contact Rick @ ATRS (Alberta Tactical Rifle) and you can get from him 338EDGE, 338EDGE AI, 338LAPUA, 338LAPUA AI, 408 CHEYTACK, OR 50BMG. Of course for that distance go with EDGE or 300rum, and you will be happy.

Thanks a lot 300rum! Went to the site and it's great! As a newbie to this I'm not to sure what you mean by upper...I've been reading a bit but is that the barrel, caliber, action and those components? As lower would be the magazine size and of it's auto, semi or bolt...

What 300rum means is that in alberta you can hunt with any of the calibres you mentioned but if 1000 is your range, then 338EDGE or 300rum will get the job done.

It's not that 50BMG is prohibited, it's that 50BMG is not exportable from the US. So, any 50BMG rifles, etc. come to Canada from sources other than the US.

Draxx11 just call rick, and he will take the time to gide you in one way or another.
This is first time for you hunting?
What I can suggest get a 300rum sendero, learn to shoot with up to 1000 yrds in any condition (windy, rainy, forecast, uphill, over the canion, over the river, etc) and when you burned the barell you can build very easy a 338edge on that action.
I do not see a logical way to throw away 6-7K on custom build rifle just to learn to shoot, so get with 1200 a nice sendero in 300rum and start shooting.

plan:
$1200 sendero
$1000 decent scope (leupold)
$90 - ballistic software
$250 - Kestrel2500 or 3000
$1100 - rangefinder (swarowski)

Grand Total - $3640 in proper equipment
Burn the barell in 2-3 years and at that time you will be readyu to invest another 1500 in new barell and muzzle brake (338edge, or bigger caliber)

IMO I just don't see why not spend the little bit of extra cash if I'm willing to spend almost $4000...sure I will be learning but if I get used to the sendero and then upgrade won't I have to get used to the .338 edge all over again?

To answer your question, yes I have hunted for about 10 years now. I'm only 22 and be it for grouse, rabbit, deer and moose I have harvested plenty. I have been shooting a 30-06 but have been intrigued by the long distance shooting and really want to get into it. I have already read quite a bit on the forums hear and I know I will have to put my time in but that's not a problem if it's something you love to do

If money are not issue, go for ... from 300rum to 338edge the difference is in less winddrift., and farther and more knockdown power over the 300 rum
Another issue is... waiting time to get a edge is from 3-8mo, or if you are lucky, you can by it from the shelf.

I'm glad to hear... Just pursued your dream... and lots, lots of practice time behind the trigger.
My self i go out in every week for shooting in every condition, just to be more familliar with the area, and the rifle.

Last season I got the biggest bull moose yet at about 200 yards. His greatest tip to tip was 46 1/2 inches which is no means a giant but a trophy nontheless biggest moose I've had in my scope also.

338 Lapua will slightly out run the Edge, and you can get better brass. Lapua brass is the way to go if you have it available for the caliber you want. If money isn't and issue, then a custom action is the way to go also. Good luck in your endeavor.

I have both a 300rum (sendero) and a custom 338 edge AI. The edge is from Alberta Tactical. For 95% of hunting the 300rum gets it done with power to spare. And the 200gr accubond has a BC of .588, and matrix bullets (located in BC) have 30 cal bullets with a BC in the 0.7 range, so going to the edge is not a huge advantage until the range gets very long. The 300rum is about all the kick most can handle without a muzzle break. For most hunting a break is a bit of a liability, you would not want to shoot my edge with no hearing protection, not even once. I have a break similar to a APS painkiller, and the top ports put out enough airflow that it blows your hair back when you touch a round off.

Don't get me wrong, if you want strictly a long range boomer and have other rifles, go 338 edge or 338 lapua (rem mlr in lapua is available at several places for roughly 1500 Canadian) then drop the rest of your budget on the best glass you can afford. There are several sources for the 300gr matchking, as well as the 300gr berger VLD.

There are several sources for Nightforce optics, as well as Sightron, Schmitt and Bender... The Canadian scene is pretty got for precision rifles, but internet searches seem to lead you to American sites first. If you are looking for a rifle in Canada go on canadiangunnutz there is lots of info there on what is available in Canada. I love this site, and it is full of very knowledgeable guys. The only problem is that I drool at all the stuff that can not be brought into Canada.
