Lots of time this fall sitting around waiting a squall to pass, this neck of the woods means hrs and hrs of talk of guns with friends.

We have had a rather lively debate on the necessity (or lack there of) for crf in dangerous game rifles. The prevailing wisdom (passed down from gun rags of old) being a dangerous game rifle is best suited to be of a crf variety. One of my most hard-core hunting friends is of that notion, only packing kimber 84, win 70s, and some ruger 77s afield.

Between myself and 4 other friends we can't remember a time where a single modern push feed has ever let us down. All of us fall in the gun looney category, owning way more rifles than necessary but couldn't for the life of us remember dropping a round in time of need.

Conundrum is this, my old 375 is driving me nuts again and I'd like to build another nearly identical but without a pawn shop savage as it's base. Rifle will be carried April to November, 95% bear protection 5% hunting essentially. Big question is build it off a crf or just easy button and use 700 clone like a mack bros?

Social convention or at least traditional wisdom is control round feed, but empirically I can't fully reinforce that.

70s are getting hard to work on or stock the way I like, same for the 77. That leaves the 700 crfs that are often a fair bit heavier than push feed options.

What would you do if you wandered around Alaska, would you not hesitate to push feed or are you going crf?

I would use a push feed over a Kimber any day of the week. Most of the issues I've had have been with CRFs, including the holy grail Mauser 98.

That being said, the Ruger guide gun or Alaskan is an awesome, handy gun available in a great caliber. For 95% of the time you're carrying it for bear protection, I don't think you can do much better than one of those with iron sights.

Tagging on to hopefully learn. Personal preference, if I ever wander around Alaska, I will take my M70 Stainless CRF in 375H&H, with 1 1/2 - 5 Leupold on QRW and iron sights. I like Winchesters CRF and Weatherby PF. Just preference. Hope to hear from the experts

Yeah, I've shot lot of them (the ruger guide gun). Seems like our local distributor must have sold them to every third person up here. Last week a buddy showed up with one in 30-06, really wish there were sights like that on more rifles. Granted scopes are pretty tough but those ruger sights are bomber for sure.

* edit as asd and I double tapped

I've considered the 70, could build a 375 roogah off a 7 or 300 winnie. Downside is the aftermarket for stocks and other nice to have tweaks. Darn 700 got so popular most the mainstream stock makers decided to forget how to inlet for 70s.

I can't say that a non CRF ever let us down and not fed properly. Can also say the same with a CRF.
If you worry about a CRF just get a Double Barrel Rifle.

I'm convinced that we live in some form of golden age and we don't really realize it. For those of us still on the sunny side of the hill, most guns; production or custom have been rather spectacular. We end up picking apart small nuances, when in truth most would be just fine.

But the nuances seem to stack when trying to rationalize a custom, using the guid gun as a base trying to decide what would make it "better". Wife pointed out for dollar spent a full custom 375 would likely cost less per day carried than any if not all my other rifles. Maybe second only to my ccw pistol (depending on the year second to none).

If I get the features dead on its easily rationalized, but deciding those features is a wonderful first world problem.

To me the real benefit of crf is the 3 position safety and being able to lock the bolt shut with a round in chamber and have firing pin blocked.

The old model 70 trigger was also bomb proof and easily cleaned.

If building off a 700 style i would consider a center feed style magazine like unknown munitions or hawkins htr. The smoothness of the centerfeed and decreased risk of cris- crossing your rounds makes me lean towards them more often for builds nowadays.

But I've got three defiance crf actions i got plans for as my first love was a model 70 crf!!!

If'n I had a time machine a defiance crf with 3 position would probably be the answer.

Current production crf are Arc? Zermtt but no 3 position...

Maybe the answe is to dig for a good old stock or used mcmillan and go build a 70.

Me personally……suffer the discomfort/aggravation and search for a New Haven Win. Model 70. If failing at that, one of the newr Win. Model 70's in SS…..or a Talkeetna! But, that's just me!

I don't think that the CRF is a game ender, .but for me…….the 3 position safety is! memtb

I thought I posted something, but can't see it. Gentry makes 3-position safety for your REM 700. That's all I know about it. I am not a Remington man
