270 Win, which bullet weight?

The problem right now is the lack of availability, so it limits the options. I saw a couple of days ago quite a few bullets for 270 at my local Sportsmans, I can let you know what they have, get some if needed and ship them to you.

I really appreciate that, that's very generous of you. I might have to root for the Wildcats today as a payback, but just today! Some of my grandkids live in Corona de Tucson, so I'm down there frequently. I'm not in a big hurry for this, it's more of a project over the next year. We're set up this year for our 34A junior hunt.

BEARDOWN!

Let me know and if needed I can get whatever I can find down here.

It's nice down there, right by the Santa Rita Mountains and unit 34A. I've seen some huge coues deer there during Javelina season, but never in October LOL.

If the grass is high and it hasn't cooled much when you come down, watch out for ratlers, don't ask me why LOL.

Good luck on the hunt.

You concerned about a shoulder on elk I assume? Last winter I did some testing with 60 Horn HP out of my 22/250 and it punched right thru the blade on a elk. Same with the 63 Sierra, which is a heck of a bullet.

Shoulders is one of the most parroted things out there, the only part of a elk shoulder that could give one trouble is the knuckle joint and on that I punched right thru it on my first elk 42 years or so ago with my 270 and a 130 Sierra BT.

Honestly, this stuff just isn't rocket science unless we choose to make it so:)

Side note, buy 5 boxes of Federal Blue Box 130's and call it a day for them, they'll be just fine!

If you've got enough of the ballistic tips and the load already worked up I see no reason to change bullets. Not sure how big the grandkids are but if changing bullets you may want to go lighter to help with the recoil.

So here's my dilemma, I've got my father's Remington Model 721, chambered in .270 Win, built in 1952. I don't need it for hunting, as I have three other rifles in good calibers that fit all of my hunting needs. I just would like my grandkids to be able to hunt with their great-grandfather's rifle. It's in great shape.

I have worked up a load with Nosler 140 grain Ballistic Tip bullets that group about .700, so that's decent for anything that my family would use it for. I'm thinking about trying a different bullet. I like the ELD-X bullet for a good all around performing bullet on medium sized game, but it only comes in 145 grain in the .277 line.

Should I load the 145 ELDX, get the good performance and give up some speed and flatness, or drop down to 130 grain, get the speed back up, maybe with a Berger Classic Hunter? Or just stay with the 140 grain BT? Thoughts?

what game are they hunting this year?

I've got two other rifles if the kids ever draw a rifle elk tag, and I hunt elk archery, so not too much concern with an elk shoulder. More concerned with a close up shot with a smaller bullet in excess of 3000 fps on a deer shoulder bone. I just like more solid bullets in medium weight at slower speeds, especially with the kids shooting.

They live off Sahaurita road, and hunt 34 when they can. It's so green right now, and the grass is pretty tall. Will be tough glassing. They both tagged out decent bucks last year, making good shots across a canyon. The junior deer hunt is pretty fun, but a little warm.

The grass is usually very tall in that area, don't remember it ever not being tall.

We would usually bump does up close and could barely see their fawns. In some areas all you'll see are the deers heads. Had a couple of diamondback encounters, one actually got me good back in March 2016, on Easter weekend.

There are some good bucks in there, stay safe

I have had good luck on deer and pigs with 140 b-tips in the 270 win and very similar 280 rem. The only reason I would think of eldx is if wanted to shoot extended ranges as they are pretty thin jacket to expand at longer ranges. The btip is thicker jacket especially towards base so I trust it more for closer shots. So if have a good load no reason to change. Nathan must have a bad batch of 130 Horn interlocks. They work well and have a pretty good reputation except for what he has written.

I will also comment that pretty much any 130 will work on shoulder shots on medium game. Heck, my kid has killed big mature whitetail and mule deer with 243 win 100 sierras and busted shouldes no problem. I killed a mature OK whtetail a bit over 300 yards with a shoulder shot using 130 vld hunter few years back in 270. If you are worried use a partition or accubond (or equiv premium bullet) but not really needed in the 270 unless getting up into Elk
