About a month ago I was fortunate enough to pick up my first XP100 something I've wanted for a while. Only problem the reason it was such a great deal $$ was the caliber, 308X1.500. Now not only do I have one of my bucket list guns but I also have a new project. Luckily I found this place searching for a new/replacement stock. Can't wait to explore the knowledge and opinions lingering about in here.

Earl Jr, you found an artifact pistol. :) I haven't heard about that round by Barnes in a long time. I got a rifle in the early 70's from an older Bench shooter chambered in that round that was built in the late 60's. It came with some brass and some modified dies, I think Pacific. I did a lot of research on that round when I got the rifle in the 70's. The parent case, 308 Winchester was not that easy for me to modify then since I didn't have all of the case cut off tools. The cases that came with the rifle had a .0002 shorter than a 30BR and 20° shoulder instead of the 30° shoulder of the 30 BR and would have probably worked by fire forming but I finally had a .308 barrel installed. If my memory serves me it was a Remington 721. It had a 1-12 twist and was fun to shoot with light recoil and easy on powder. Traded the rifle for an old 1911 in the late 70's since I already had a 30-30 for hunting. The round was great out to about 150 yards with me shooting it. Back then it was compared to the 7.62 or 30-30 in velocity but higher pressures in some of the books I read.
Good luck with your new Project. Be sure to give Ernie a call. I have three of the stocks like he has for sale. I got them through him on a group purchase from McMillan. They are great. They fit great in the hand and make the XP easy to shoot from a bipod, tripod or bench rest with the angle of the grip. Ernie will do your right. He helped me along after I found 2, 7BR XP's and an Estate sale. Kept one as original and had the other completely customized into a .284 Winchester with one of those McMillan Stocks. The 284 was one of my Bucket list calibers and even better it was in an XP. It is the Avatar Photo over my handle.

Currently I'm in the planning process for this pistol. I want something with a bit of punch without to much violence on my end. I'm also wanting to stay with readily available ammo which is where the can of worms is not just opened but generally slung all over the room.
Ive been a fan of the 6.5 sweed for over 20 years but OAL is a tad long for this action l think with heavier projectiles. My next thought is the ever popular 308 win. or (the worm can) a 6.5 grendel that I have no experience with. Just haven't been able to justify it with my Sweeds shooting so well.
Here is where I want to tap in to the knowledge floating around on the board. For the few of us who are pistol hunters, what would you see as the pros or cons of either the 308 or Grendel given a max barrel length of 14"?

Also Ernie I am interested in a stock.
Earl,
You can easily do a 6.5 Swede in a XP-100. Remember it is a single-shot.
I have one McMillan stock in stock that is not taken.
It is the same color combo as the one that is on my 7mm Dakota XP-100.
The forends are opened up for the Sendero/Remington Varmint, and they already have the forends threaded for a sling swivel stud (BONUS!).

Grendel will have less speed and will affect down range impact velocities when hunting.
I would rather have a 6.5 Creed, 6.5 Swede, 6.5-284, 7mm-08 or 308 Winchester than a Grendel.
But that is just my personal preference.
Depending on what you want, the Grendel may be perfect for you.
If you already love the Swede, and have brass, dies, etc... you may want to stick with that.
What kind of distances are you wanting to shoot at or hunt at?

What an idiot, I'm having a heck of a morning. For some reason I was typing Grendel and meant Creedmore. I had been talking to a buddy the other day and nixed the Grendel idea just because of ammo availability. The creed and 308 seem to be on more shelves. With the 308 being basically world wide.

Be easy on yourself.
We all make mistakes.
6.5 Creed is a pretty easy on the shooter (recoil wise), and there is a ton of components for loading and excellent factory ammo if you want the easy way out.
A lot of components and factory ammo available for the 308 Win too.
Personal preference...I have both :)

To be honest if I can put 5 in the black at 250 I'll be happy with the gun. It is going to take the place of my contender in 30-30 as a woods gun. I've only made one shot out to 300 yards in the last 5 years with the rest being under 100 and most being less than 50 yards. My 300 and 267 yard shots were because I was told you can't hit that deer. I called the 267 behind the ear being a smart butt. Now I'm by no means a precision shooter I just like to have fun and put food on the table. I'm going pistol only to put a new angle on the game and bring some sport back to it.
