Fake Nightforce??????

Have a chance to buy a 7x35x56. ACATAR F1...model C569. Guy will meet in person. Ya'all ever hear of a fake nightforce before I make a drive? Should weigh a ton, and the glass alone should give it away or not, but thought I'd ask. Wants $1500...

Any thoughts appreciated.
Sometimes a good deal can be found. I have known guys to sell guns for ridiculously lower than market value because they are in need of immediate funds. Nightforce customer service should be able to confirm serial number should you be able to obtain before meeting the seller.

Total value to the seller may not be as far off as we think were he to sell the scope on one of the online auction sites. The largest online auction site charges selling fees of 15% up to $1k and 6.5% over $1k, plus additional fees of up to 4% for payment services on final value and shipping surcharges. Additionally, the buyer will have to pay sales tax. If the scope was valued at 75% of MSRP, which I believe would be fair assessment, you would be in the ballpark.

You know, maybe the guy isn't broke but instead is loaded. I got a steal of a deal on a brand new Dakota, custom stocked; blank alone probably cost what I paid for the rifle. He was selling 7 custom Dakotas.

But, easier to fake a scope than a rifle, so agree with serial number.

Interview the guy well...you are probably a good judge of character. Some don't care about the money as much as getting something else right away or divorce etc etc

I'm in Vegas, too. I have the C571 which is similar to what you are looking at buying, just different reticle. PM me and maybe we can meet up so you can see a legit NF scope is for comparison.

I've never seen a fake Nightforce and an 7X35X56 model should be easy to check it's authenticity. My initial feeling is that the scope is stolen and a quick call to Nightforce with the serial number might reveal if someone has reported it as well as it's authenticity. I have almost the same scope and the first thing I would do if I lost it would be to put in a call to Nightforce after I called the police. It might be legit, so I wouldn't be accusing but, I wouldn't want to buy a stolen scope either.

Now if this was me selling the scope of that value I'd have kept the receipt
I would ask to see his purchase receipt and if it's not in the ballpark of an original "new" NF then I'd back out.

So you're willing to buy a used scope for nearly new price?
Want to buy a Steiner 3x12x56?

Used optics do depreciate precipitously. Especially from companies like NF that do not offer lifetime warranties. I would not pay even half of retail for a used one, I would rather just buy new. What if the scope is broken? Then you are gonna be SOL.
This would be my bigger concern, legit scope but broken/not tracking and out of warranty.

Also, to everyone recommending that he take a pistol/go armed/etc... maybe I am old school (or just very low tolerance for risk), but going somewhere armed specifically because you are worried the deal might be a setup is a really good to wind up having to deal with the legal repercussions of a defensive gun use or worse getting shot yourself. I carry a gun everywhere for personal defense in the unlikely circumstance that danger goes out of its way to find me as I am going about minding my own business NOT so that I can feel safer going into a situation I should have just avoided entirely. If you are that concerned about it the smarter thing to do is just let the opportunity pass.

Expanding on checking the scope over carefully if you determine the scope is legitimate. Look for impressed lines around the perimeter where the scope mount tightens. If the mounts were out of alignment, one of the edges of the mounts will dig into / impress into the scope depending if the resultant of the scope being bent is bowed up, bowed down or to some degree to the sides. Look through the scope to see if the cross-hairs are vertical. I had a scope that every time I shot it the reticles would float radially due to the lens being loose. Maybe there are other experiences this forum has to share. That was the Late 1970's right when scopes were becoming popular so to mention the Japanese brand would be out of place with today's optics.
Be safe
