I'm getting close to ordering a new gun. I'm thinking 280ai, but not too many components available to reload for it. I have everything for 30-06 and right now, it's in a close second for cartridge choice. So if you were going to get a new gun, would you let the availability of components sway your decision?

To a point, with the 280 ai you can always run .280 rem thru it and walla 280 ai brass supposedly. Confirmed that with Fierce and a few other sources. Now just large rifle primers, powder, and bullet of choice. Looking 280 ai myself. But I have the reloading stuff already as I have a 7mm rem mag.

No! But I am already an established reloader and have plenty of components for both. As you can see, it is purely situational.

You can fire form 280AI from 30-06 case and several others cases. So brass should never be problem. .284 caliber bullets are in all different weight too.

I pick up my 280 next week. I found couple boxes of Peterson brass online a member here alerted me to. I had no problem finding bullets in stock at Sportsman's and Midway (ELD X in 150 and 162, Accubonds, and Barnes TTSX 140s). Powder might be tough if you currently don't have any. I'm hoping my supply o fH4350 will work for me.

Here is another option. Talked to one ole boy here and he reloads and shoots in competition states after temp hits 90+ the bullets rises roughly five inches.

Presuming you have a 30.06 (basis comment about reloading equipment), interested in reasoning for looking at a caliber close to the 30.06, i.e., is this gun a replacement for current 30.06 or are you looking to get something ballistically different? For flat shooting mulie guns you could go lighter into the 270-6.5 range.

That the problem with several IMR powder is it's changes with the weather. I blew a primer out of a rifle using IMR 4350 powder due to weather changes. Move on to Hodgdon H 4350 and H4831 powders and stop that problem. See attachment on Extreme powders. I changed over in 2000 and never look back.

Yes, I have 30-06 brass, some 270 brass( 20 or so). It's all range brass that I have picked up through the years. I have quite a variety of powder and enough primers for now.
270 is right behind 30-06 for my choices, but I like to have something that no one has heard of when I show up to hunt.

If you are finding it difficult to get brass and can't get regular 280 rem to fire form, use 270 win, run it into a 280 die, resize and then fire form, No donut in the neck sizing up 270 brass either. Love my 280AI's.

True, but if he goes with .30-06, he can use .270 Win, .280 Rem, and .35 Whelen.
