Side Arm for Grizzly Country

Do,do,do looking out my front door.

If you have ever been in a tussle with a semi you know the slide won't operate if it is pressed against you or your opponent(no, not the front) so it is only good until the bear is on you if you are lucky enough to get time to draw run thru the mag.
That means use a revolver.
Bear spray ? Yes, it works great provided you can deploy it before the bear is on top of you, it doesn't work if you spray him in the stomach when he's on top of you or there is not bad, swirling wind. You will leave him with an orange stain on his underside so they know what bear to kill, good job ! If he's on me I would rather have a knife or a revolver.
Take whatever makes you feel warm and fuzzy but you may be forced to use it in a circumstance that you hadn't planned on.
Take a revolver, spray, and a knife.
If you hadn't heard the Meateater Afognak Island bear attack story Steven was having lunch telling his 5 buddies "if you want a sandwich like this get your own f##king TV show" as the bear charged from behind, 18" from him. It's about 8:20 in the clip.

Wise man. If your using a pistol on a bear if you get off more then 3rds the bear wasn't a threat to you.
To each there own but I see it time and time again that the argument for a 10mm is how many rounds in the magazine. When a bear is on top chewing on you and your 10 goes click or jams from the 4-5" long hair it's game over. Wheel gun goes click just pull the trigger again.
More about shot placement then what caliber your packing. Had a grizzly this spring take 7rds of 375HH. Sounds like a tough bear right? No. Wasn't until the guy hit it through the lungs and shoulder the 6th round before it stopped and he put one more in. The other 5 hit paws, legs and just about everywhere else. Can't believe this thread made it 33 pages!

If you take proper precautions in grizzly country your more likely to get killed in a car wreck on the way there then by a bear.

No, no, no ! the minute you go into the woods you will be attacked by 50 bears.

I've only spent 22 years riding the highest Griz concentration area in the lower 48 and have YET TO SEE ONE.

I live in Los Angeles county and have had 2 grizzly encounters, both in Wyoming, maybe I'm just lucky but that's enough for me to take it seriously.

I've never won the lottery either.....but, there is always the possibility, provided I buy a ticket. Same with venturing into bear country....it can happen! Much the same as those who are whining about the present ammo/component shortage.....you do not have a shortage, if you prepared in advance! ;)

Oh.....very sorry to hear of your loss of sight! memtb

I would have to disagree with you in re: bear spray working great. There are quite a few instances where bear spray was deployed and the bear blew right through it. One instance that comes to mind is here in SW Mt a few years back. An archery hunter who was a timber cruiser for the forest service was attacked while hunting - he had ample time to deploy the spray, did everything right, bear spray was well within its shelf life and the bear blew right through the spray and chewed him up. The bear left and the hunter was trying to get back to his truck when the bear attacked again blew through the spray again and tore into him again then left. The guy was able to make it back to his truck and drive part of the way to town when he found someone to assist him. This guy is an experienced hunter and woodsman who did everything right - The spray failed to stop or deter the bear- twice. This isn't the only time it has failed to work, there are other instances. Buyer Beware

I totally agree that it may not stop the bear, plenty of instances where the gun didn't stop them either. Even scarier was the spray demo where the can was flat and didn't spray at all. Carry all three.

22 yrs riding in Grizzly country - never seen one - and your from Newark as in New jersey ? Don't know about that one.

Just playing devils advocate here but the reality is - most times not always you will only have time to either make a well placed shot or two. You will most certainly not have time to deploy the spray only to find it didn't work then say Geez I guess I better shoot him.

Another case of typing before reading.
