Backstory: A little over a year ago I wanted a magnum caliber for an elk hunt I was going on in Colorado. After some research and Berger making the 195gr in .284 I landed on the 28 Nosler. I didn't have enough time to build a custom gun, so I ran across a Christensen Mesa Long Range in 28 Nosler. During load development the fastest we could push the 195s without pressure issues was 2850 if my memory is correct. I just wasn't happy with this. By all my research, I should have been able to push the 195s at or over 3000fps. I felt like I was handicapping myself with the Christensen, so this past off season I sold the gun and started purchasing parts for a custom build.

I decided to go with a Zermatt formally Bighorn action, Bartlein #3 1-8 twist wave fluted and finished at 26", Iota Kremlin stock since McMillian and Manners had long lead times, H-S precision bottom metal, Timney Calvin Elite trigger, and Harrell muzzle brake. I had Tony from ZG Customs here in Texas chamber the barrel, bed the stock, and cerakote in olive drab to match my stock. I went with a March-F 3-24X42 FFP scope with mil reticle. Pics of the rifle:

Right, wrong, or indifferent for load development I decided to do a ladder test until I found pressure, back off the pressure in a node I was comfortable with, load 3 rounds in 0.1 grain increments in the node to shoot for accuracy, and once I found the most accurate charge adjust seating depth to see if I could tighten up the groups.

Since there was no published data on the powder I could find avaliable and the 195gr Bergers we started conservative on the initial charge and worked our way up.

Here are the 1st 5 shots out of the gun to foul it, break in, and zero scope:

Better than any group I ever got with the Christensen, so I was happy with the rifle from the 1st trigger pull.

Initial ladder test:

Even though the rifle showed great accuracy, I didn't build it to land at 2800ish fps with the 195s. I never saw pressure signs at 79.0 grains, so I decided to start there with another ladder test.

Here are the results of the 2nd ladder test:

At 85.0gr of powder and 3129fps, I was just starting to see signs of pressure. I decided that was good enough.

After looking at the results, we decided to go load in the 9, 10, and 11 node. 3 shot groups in 0.1gr increments. Here are those results:

Next up was adjusting seating depth. My initial load I think was a thousandth off the lands and shot 3/8" @ 100 yards, but I wanted to see if I could do better. I went down .004" at a time and would shoot 2 or 3 shots depending on if the 1st two touched. I ended up shooting a 1/4" group, but in full disclosure I could not get it to duplicate. Here's the group:

Next up it was time to go back to the range and verify dope. Before I verified my dope, I had to try one more time to see if I could duplicate the 1/4" group. In the end, it shot shot close to the same as the load just off the lands which duplicated several times. Since they fit into the mag and feed fine from the mag, I decided to stick to the original length. Here are those results:

After I convinced myself I was satisfied with the accuracy of the gun, I verified my dope out to 800 yards. Here are the final results:

***NOTE*** At around 75-80 rounds, the rifle speed up 110fps which is exactly what I was told to expect once the barrel broke in.

Very satisfied with the build, load, and glass. The only thing I would change is doing the build sooner and not having wasted all the time on the Christensen. I leave on the 16th for a mule deer hunt in Montana. Hopefully, my first mule deer kill is the guns first kill.

Hope this post helps someone along their path to a rifle build or finding accuracy.

i think if there is something specific you want out of a bullet and cartridge combo you need to go custom. Factory guns aren't made to take advantage of the these big long bullets. I think you made a wise decision to build your own. Nice looking rifle and seems to be a great shooter. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it!

You did not. I tend to run my loads close to pressure and don't want anyone taking my data as gospel. I'll send you a private message.

Very interesting results, and good looking rifle to boot.

I'm running a Alamo Precision Rifles Maverick, same twist and barrel length as your rifle. The 195's right now with 100 rounds down the barrel I'm at 2930 FPS, which is giving me a node with groups in the .183 neighborhood. I'm .1000 off the lands, with no pressure signs. I'll dig out latest target if any one cares. Would you mind sending me the powder your using? I'm always interested to learn what others are using for this caliber and bullet.

Very nice. Alamo builds some nice rifles. I'm interested to hear what powder you are using.

Since I've had several ask, IMR 8133 for reference. I wouldn't recommend anyone starting with my powder charge. I'd do a ladder and work up until you see signs of pressure with your action. No way my previous rifle could have handled this load from what I saw during development.

Retumbo!!!! Now you know why I'm interested to see what others are using!! Retumbo was getting hard to get before the Covid hit and and now its **** near impossible!!!.. I have a decent stockpile, but always looking for new load data.

Not sure if any load/bullet combo short of 300/prc 225/230/245 can compare to the 28nosler/195 for perfect elk medicine!!!

What a great write up!!!

Kudos!!!

I built it for elk, but first up is a mule deer hunt in Montana.

Thanks!

Retumbo is what I wanted to use, but I couldn't find.

@Sandman What does March call that reticle? I went to their website and couldn't seem to find it. I would love that reticle on a hunting rifle.

Retumbo could not be found i ended up going with H 1000 . Even thats getting hard to find and I never really found a load i loved. Now that hunting season is over thinking of trying LRT.

8133 is a good powder in the 28. I switched to it after carbon and pressure issues with RE33. I really like it too.

2 coworkers and my nephew are all running APR 28's so we all keep on the constant look out for it.

I had not seen anything on 8133 for the 28, I'll keep my eyes open from some too!!!
