Ultimate long range cartridge

I think I will just watch this one. too many voices stating different directions. I agree with certain people and laugh at others.
I will give just one part of the puzzle that I do not see people talking about.
What ever caliber you go with, what ever weight slug you go with. my best advice from experience shooting 1,000 yards to 3,000 yards is what ever twist you think you need.. jump up to the next tightest twist, you will never regret it. the reason is this; what ever you think will stabilize the slug, by the time your slug reaches 1/2 to 3/4 of the way there, it will have slowed enough to need that tighter twist. for example, I shot 190 grain 30 caliber slug from a 1:10" twist by the time I hit 1,500 yards the slug just destabilized even though 1:10" was good up to 200 grain slugs. after a certain yardage the slug will slow it's speed and it will slow it's rotation; both will ruin stabilization. that is why I advise you to go with a tighter twist than you think you need. I learned my lesson many years ago.
(1 mile to 2 miles and beyond) personally I would select the 408 Chey Tech, a straight taper fluted barrel, Barrel length 28" to 32", tightest twist I could get, a good muzzle brake, comfortable stock, 30 MOA offset bases, steel rings, the highest magnification/highest quality scope I could afford, and a high quality steel bi-pod with sand bags. I would also get all the reloading equipment for the caliber and the brass uniforming tools.
The funniest part about all this.. I can say that most people out there will disagree with me.
use my advice as you see fit.
later tatters.

.375 Cheytac
On a Podcast interview I posted here earlier on this thread I mentioned that my two recommended rifles to get started in the fun would be either the 375 Cheytac or the 300 Norma. From what I was told afterwards by some folks the podcast interview has info that anyone at whatever stage in ELR from planning a build to season shooters will walk away with some good info.

In your link that you posted, that year as noted in the interview with Accurate Shooter at the KO2M I was putting a lot of heat on the throat with that much powder with a 50 cal shorten up a bit and necked down to a 375 - I could easily push a 400 grain bullet at 3400 fps. But at a cost when having to crank so many rounds down range fast with the time restraints - a little hard on the barrel throat erosion. In 2019 we opened up the brass and chamber to a 416 - I'm pushing a 550 grain bullet now at 3102 fps and the throat erosion issue with a lot of ammo fired in a very short time is gone and very manageable.

C'mon....It isn't "necessary" to shoot as far as we do, but we must.
I think the 338 Lapua is a stepping stone and a great start. A lot of guys don't shoot beyond 2000 yards but want to get their toes wet beyond that so it's a fine line. Not sure I need it but I can see myself building one just because. Most of mine and many guys shooting ELR is 2k. Living in the east makes it hard to fine range beyond a mile and that's difficult.

If you want to use the King Of 2 Miles as a reference just know that there is multiple people pitching in on their guns. It's not one persons gun. It's more like 5 or 6 peoples gun and sometimes more. The cost of building a 375 CT or bigger is Incredibly expensive. He mite as well just build a 416 Barrett because there is no better. Buy why build a 416 Barrett witch can shoot 5 + miles when he only wants to shoot 2 miles.

What is your definition?

Pretty much my point. I'm not one that believes "Overkill" is a word but if I need a rifle for beyond 2K, it'll be the .375 Cheytac.

Thats why it is humbling to do well as a tee shirt gang when everything comes out of your back pocket. Its dang expensive but for a couple of us its our only hobby or bad habit and the challenge of putting it all together and hitting some steel with limited rounds and a time restraint makes it a challenge. Its even better when a few of the rifles we use were built chambered, threaded and all in our own garage.

Thats why I still think the 300 Norma is the all around reasonable fun gun followed by the standard 375 cheytac for the folks that will rarely see 3000+ yards but be bouncing in the 1760 to 2400 yard range a lot.

So your rifle is fully custom ,tell us
So your rifle is fully custom ,tell us about it.
Its not a full custom . Its t cooper firearms long range light weight, proof research carbon fiber barrel. 20 moa rail . Topped it off with a Swarovski X5I 5-25X56. It's the most I ever spent on rifle but wanted something a litter nicer then a off the rack rifle so then had to buy a nice hard case .
When I started my plan was to spend around 3 grand. But when I went to look I liked the proof research barrel then when I looked at the swarovski X5I scope my budget was blown . Kind of reminded me of buying a car kept adding Options and the price kept going up. But was working alot of over time so decided to spoil myself

I am certainly not a 2 miler, or a one miler for that matter, but I have made waves in baked clay shooting the Ma Duece at targets a quite a ways off. Does anyone still shoot John Brownings 50 anymore?
I'm a fan of the Barrett 416. It's sorta like a 50 ! Good to six miles according to Paul Philips. Now lot's of bullets and powders to try. And relatively low pressure to extend barrel life. The break down is roughly this for my adventure shooting to beyond my boundaries.
416 Barrett m99 @ $3400
Scope 4x24x52 @ $1900
Phenix bypod @. $ 500
200 rounds from Barrett@ _1000
Reloading equipment@ $1000 ( but also does other calibers)
Verious powders to tame the beast@ 350
Same with bullets of different weights@$300 Lehigh 416gn@ 3400 fps or my favorite cutting edge 450 gn @ 3100
For a grand total of $8450
So for not much more you can put the pressure on you to shoot beyond your limits 🤠

How about that he doesn't need another gun when he masters 2miles and wants 5miles

Well, look at what people are shooting for King of Two Mile. It's probably going to be .375 caliber or bigger and best fired from a 25lb+ rifle with a brake that creates a large muzzle blast.

Ultimate is a matter of opinion.
416 barrett. Saw one for sale at the gun store for $6000.00 dollars.
