Cartridge Choice for Long Action Rebarrel

My .270 is due a rebarrel probably at the end of this coming season. It's a standard long action 700 remmy.

As I'm now using a different rifle for guiding work the .270 is going to just be a "fun" long range rifle for me that I'll hand load for, so wild cats are on the table and I fancy something a bit "out there" if sensible enough.

Considering a .280 AI as the front runner at the moment. I fancy shooting 160g and similar bullets and will be using it for red deer and hopefully on a spring black bear hunt in a year or two when I get over to your side of the pond.

I have a .270 AI with 30" 1:8" propelling the 175 Matrix at 2993 FPS (current accuracy load H4831SC) but plain old 270 Win with a 26"+, 1:8" or faster loaded with 156/168 Hammer Bullets, 165/175 Matrix VLD, or 170 Berger, etc., is no slouch.

6.5-06 will push a 140gr to 3000+ fps. I'm running 3042fps in mine

27 Nosler. You said way out there and you obviously like the 270 caliber. Get a 1/8 twist and shoot the 150-170 class of bullets you will not be sorry.

280 AI is a good choice and you might take a look at a 284 win in a long action gives plenty of room to set the long heavies out to get the performance that the case is capable of. I'm going to start a custom build and looking hard at the 284, have one in a F-class gun and absolutely love it. Shot all day with low recoil and components aren't hard to come by.

I'd go with a 7mm Rem Mag and shoot the heavies, or a 7 SAUM

If you want something smaller then a 280AI or 270AI sounds good

Good point, although the OP did mention wildcats are an option, maybe a short magnum maybe not. Like I mentioned a 7 SAUM or a 270 WSM are great options

If he wants to stick with the current bolt face then a 280 or 270 in the AI version sounds good, cant go wrong with either one.
